A while ago I posted about my friend and her ex racehorse.

Well it has ended in tears ....

She fell off months ago on first hack and was out of the saddle for 6 weeks, horse then got seedy toe and then put a nail through lamina.

So just back in work.

I opted out of helping back in late June as I was getting married in July and wanted to be in one piece as well as not having the time to dedicate to a youngster - i was being expected to cover 3 days a week and do full stable care as well as iron out problems of bad manners. Since then horse (4yr old ex-racehorse) was only being ridden once or twice a week and lunged once - never in canter under saddle So feel a little guilty as could have predicted where this was going....

So this weekend friend lunges horse, then the next day rides him. Bear in mind up to this point she has only ridden out of walk when an instructor is on the floor so Walk is calm, so tries trot all calm so asks for canter and surprise surprise horse runs off and puts in a couple of bucks. Rider exits left into the fence - agin out of choice because she was finding him dangerous... and breaks her collar bone! Horse now to be sold as he is unpredictable!

But the price is interesting - she bought him Easter time when he was well mannered in and out of the stable, all 3 paces were there though the canter transition was still green, he popped a fence and went in a really nice outline. Price was £2.5k.

Now his manners are that of spoilt horse - bargy, hard to catch, headshy to bridle, he will only go with his head in the air, wont respond to the leg, doesnt jump, doent hack....
Price still £2.5k

Offered her 1.5k and she isnt interested.....

Am I wrong?

She should have been thrilled at getting 1.5k for him from you! In my opinion hes now worth more like half that if shes lucky. Good luck to her selling him.. she'll need it at that price!

I don't think you are wrong and I think she should have bitten your hand off. He is only 4 and not done anything worth speaking about and very green. IMO he is only worth what you offered and she probably paid too much for him at the time.
The problems he has now will probably be quite easily sorted out. If he is bright enough to learn so many bad habits in a short time, he is bright enough to re-learn good manners quickly too.
She would be better cutting her loses and at least she would know that he was going somewhere he would be looked after and sorted out.
Maybe after he has been up for sale for a bit and nobody willing to pay the money then she will come back to you.

Your friend knows that you know how much she paid and she might think you've got attached to him. My old YO tried this on with my first loan horse... 3.5K and wouldn't budge "cos that's what she paid for it" (cheeky cow didn't) and you will too. Frankly if it was out on the open market it wouldn't get more than 600. I got Sleeps for a grand (many consider that over the odds) and he has impeccable ground manners and also seriously looks after his novice dad when he's on his back... and (touching every bit of wood in sight) no health problems at the moment or when I bought him.

I think she may just come back to you in a few weeks when she has no biters or "tyre kickers" offering her 500.

She should be happy you offered 1.5K, when she has no takers drop your offer down and just tell her the truth horses at the moment aren't really selling. Don't see why she should ruin a decent horse and profit.

She'll change her mind come winter time when it's still for sale, no one in their right mind is going to pay that for a horse like that, specially a TB.

Hmmmm, she sounds like she bought a horse when she really intended to get a hamster!

Tell her to look at project horses web site. TB's are cheap, problem TB's are even cheaper, some are free and still can't find homes. I hope she comes back and accepts your offer, but if pride takes over, we all know who will come off worst, as it's always the horse.

i dont think i would have offered more than a few hundred.(i am very tight !!!!!) he is going to need a lot of work. i hope she is going to be honest with anyone that comes to see him.

I totally agree - I have would never pay more than meat money (£250/300ish) for something that dangerous. There are plenty of decent, loving and easy to do ex racehorses that are ready to be schooled and given a new life. They are not all flat out speed monsters.

The couple that I have had in fact have been so backwards, I've wondered if they mentally all there - but they were just so laided back and lazy, especially when they are up to a decent weight - obviously enjoying a life of luxury and enjoying a bit of jumping and a gentle gallop along the beach!

P.s.I don't like thoroughbreds! Give be a Welsh Cob any day!

to nme thats worth £500... its a tb... goinginto winter - bucks... will most likely drop weight and cost a fortune to feed up.

just walk away. not your problem

She refused £1500?! She is mad, if she gets £2.5k for it I will eat my hat, and my hat would taste like rubbish.

Agree with everyone else, I paid less than 1k for mine and although he's no world beater he has manners to die for, is perfect to hack out and wouldnt dream of bucking. He is a bit older, 11 now, but a green youngster isnt going to be worth much at all in the present climate and going into winter! Has she looked on Horsemart?

I agree! On a bad day I would give mine away (or pay someone!) and he's not as bad as that by any means anymore.
Do you actually want this horse? or are you just giving your friend a way out?

It honestly sounds like she knows nothing about horses ESP ex racers and I feel sorry for the horse. It's him that's being labeled when once again it's the owners at fault. So many people take ex racers and haven't a clue how to ride them or deal with them
