My injury-prone RoR has just emerged from a six week lay-off (in the field) following a stifle strain. He was becoming a bit dangerous to handle as he recovered , so the vet prescribe trazadone to stop him hooning about and being too feisty on the end of a lead rope. He is now meant to be starting in-hand rehab. He has wised up to the trazadone and won't eat his bucket feed if he detects its presence. (expensive waste!) He has to come off it before he can be ridden anyway, so I cut it out for 36 hours. Today was meant to be our first walk up the road, in a bridle. Well. I got him in...he was very good from the field. But when I unrugged him and put the bridle on, he got in a right paddy and started standing up in the stable. I took the bridle off nd we charged about, bucking and rearing and generally telling me to pi** off. It wasn't whoopie-doo excitement. It seemed to be actually 'meant'. I'm afraid I bailed on walking him out...Any advice?

Can you get a pro rider uses to dealing with this type of situation who is prepared to sit on him first?

There are calmers that mean you can ride whilst the horse is getting back into being ridden again. I think you can lightly sedate a horse with ACP and ride although how safe thst is I'm not too sure.

Thank you for replying! I have to walk him in hand for ten days before getting on. He's on equinutritive No more nerves already and has been for some time. He's usually a sweetheart...just a bit thoroughbredy at times! He likes work and once hes in a routine is altogether nicer! My trainer is coming down tomorrow if I need her, but I really have to be able to manage him myself.

Are our horses related?!
How would he be if you just took him out in hand straight from the field?
Just read this! Great minds and all that...that's exactly what I did today and he was a bit spicy but basically very good when I was very clear and firm! Hurrah!

TBs out of work can be crazy in my experience! That said, was he alone on the yard? Could it have been separation anxiety?
No...and he is genuinely not interested in the other three horses in their individual adjacent paddocks. He's definitely become bored, though...hence the tricky chicken and egg situation. But had a breakthrough today taking him tsright out of the field. 20 mins walk in hand with a bit of spice but basically obedient!

What are you feeding him in terms of hard feed?

I have an ex racer TB who has been a dope on a rope since I got him in June. He’s recently been treated for ulcers so had some time off, he’s also had 2 weeks off after wolf teeth removal. He’s become a right pain under saddle and I have to admit I did get off today after a very scary buck on an a hack. Had to lead him home which was challenging as he kept bucking 🤦🏻‍♀️

I think in his case he’s super fresh and not having enough work to keep his brain occupied! He’s my first TB but I do think they can change after some time off! Well he definitely has!

I would try cutting back the hard feed, I agree TopSpec can send some loopy! I’m going to also cut out the linseed I’ve been giving mine too but otherwise he’s on a fairly medium calorie mash (Allen and page muscle and focus) as he needs to put on some weight. It’s tricky this time of year for sure the weather does not help!

Can you get someone else to help with the rehab? Best of luck x

I think occupying their brains is key...but it gets into a vicious circle if they have to be off or are in rehab. So frustrating!!

Yep we are in a vicious cycle for sure!! Mine is having his SI joint medicated on Monday too so that will need more time off 🙄 Argh I hope he appreciates the expense I’m going to for him!!

Fingers crossed for you. the costs are eye-watering. I did all the rehab with Lion and he is fine SI-wise, now. No doubt he'll find something else to mean the vet has to come out...
