Got home this evening to find my tb had somehow scraped his skin off under his forelock! Vet reckoned it happened probably this morning! Been given the usual bute and AB but doubt I'll be able to clean it as he's very protective of his head (usually!!). TBH it looks bl**dy awful! Not able to staple it as didn't catch it in time and it's too swollen so the skin won't stretch back over wound!! Will post pics tomorrow as too late to be uploading etc now! Just had to post to get it off my chest! I know we can't sit in watching over horses all day but I do wish I hadn't gone out for the whole day today (very rare!). It must be so sore! It's created a big hole in his head, very close to his brain! He was very lucky in a way!

you poor things - hope he is ok but dont blame yourself - you cant watch them 24/7!

My TB colt cut his leg badly earleir this year on an electric fence (fine now) - he went out at night with a new companion and his old one was on the yard next door!!
He did it between 7.30am and 8.10am though - so if i'd just been down a little earlier....

DONT BLAME YOURSELF!

XXX

Hope hes ok x

Oh I hope yours recovered okay? It's so upsetting when they injure themselves. Trying not to blame myself! Vets positive and said he'll be fine but when he's got half his forehead hanging off to the bone, it's kinda soul destroying!! He's out now, eating etc but i just feel so bad for him!! X

The graze is about 4/5 inches across too! And about 3 inches in depth! The only thing I think he's done it on is the elec fencing as it was dangling down although it doesn't explain the hole!

I know it's awful when you think you could of done something to prevent it but like I said you cant be on watch 24/7.

Try not to worry - I am sure he will be ok. It does always look worse!

Tippy cut his leg bad - it looked awful but was actually nothing and although just just a wound below his knee we had to bandage his whole leg up for weeks!! but just so he wouldnt bend it!
It healed perfectly and you cant even see it now.

Hope all goes well and keep me posted xx

my girl did something similar! an inch split to the right of her poll bone when the vet came he stuckhis finger in the hole to the knuckle and declaired she had fractured her poll bone and there was a huge risk of infection. My reply was " get your finger out of her head then and make sure you clean it well" . She healed fine by the way, with no sign of bone infection.

Tried to clean the blood off his face this morning to no avail! He wasn't having any of it! Been given some sedative so will use tomorrow and hopefully it will sedate him enough so I can at least wash the blood off his face and nose. Been given some fly repellant paste, managed to get a bit on! Didn't think to wear gloves and now have bright yellow hands! Looks like a case of fake tan gone wrong!!
On the plus side, he's eating fine and mooching around the field quite happy! Will put some photos on later, when I get hold of the laptop!!

Thanks for your support rachmacypixie11, angua2 and daisydo and im pleased your horses recovered well, gives me hope!!!

Hope he heals well, poor boy. Don't blame yourself, you can't be permanently on guard and even if you were accidents still happen x
