Just wondering how many of you (if any of you have) notified Weatherbys that you own your TB? Unless you let Weatherbys know, sadly the breeders/ex-owners of these horses cannot ever trace the whereabouts of these animals (if they want to).

We do (like other breeders) pay for a tracking on the TB stock we breed, but unfortunately if they then get sold on out of racing, and the new owners don't inform Weatherbys that they now have that horse, sadly even though we've paid for tracking, it cannot trace where our horses end up. We do get told when they are sold on from sales or races, but it's when they come out of training, that breeders lose touch with the whereabouts. So can I just ask everyone who has a registered TB, and if you haven't already done so, can you let Weatherbys know as there may be breeders out there wondering what happened to a horse they once bred.

Personally, if anyone has a mare registered as "Its Peggy Speech", do let us know. We sold her out of racing and know she went into Sandhurst Military Academy as a polo pony, but sadly, do not know whether she is still in their ownership, has been sold on, is alive or dead. I have contacted Sandhurst on a few occasions now, but sadly, they don't even bother to respond to my letters. So if anyone has a contact at Sandhurst to do with the polo side, can you find out for me. Thanks.

Have you tried the NED (Equine Database)? The good news for you is that we aren't allowed to register horses with BE other than under their original passport names, it's a new rule this year, and I think it is the same for BSJA and BD; so that should make it easier for you to follow your horses, if they affiliate in their new careers.

A couple of years ago we had an ex-racehorse who did really well eventing and I sent a pic and note saying how well he was doing to the breeder and didn't get a reply - so it works both ways!

Unfortunately we don't hold much faith in the NED as most of the horses we bred/own have the wrong information on the NED. Some of them are the wrong breed, some the wrong sex, some totally different parentage, so until the whole system is 100% safe, which I can't see happening for a while yet, this isn't the answer.

As regards contacting a breeder with your good news, yes - I know. We contacted the breeder of one of our TB mares when she did exceptionally well in a competition, and didn't get a response back from them either. Maybe some breeders aren't as stupid as us - Its Peggy Speech is the only horse we've only lost contact with in our 30+ years of breeding.

Penniless I'm looking out for a TB coming out of racing now. When I find one, I'll contact the breeder to let them know where their horse had ended up (having fun with me lol)

Does it cost money to notify Wetherbys and register yourself as the owner? Cant say this has ever crossed my mind and have had a few TB's!

O_B - Only came across the form myself a month or so ago, so presume it is a new thing. Think there is a charge, it is on the form, but not megabucks
LindW - Take one of mine off my hands(please!), webby in my profile.

Yep, I did *smug smile* BUT only really because I had to buy a new passport for PF. It really hadn't crossed my mind before. I didn't for any of my other TBs and if I hadn't I would've had the MOST godawful time trying to register her here in my name! (wasn't exactly a piece of cake as it was)

It was £8 when I had Nelson transfered into my name. Haven't done it for Paddy yet as keep forgetting

Well done all of you who have done it or will do it. I think maybe Weatherbys will be inundated now with people saying they've got a TB! We're speaking to authorities at the moment to see if they can get a database sorted, but if we have no joy, we're going to see about setting something up ourselves where anyone with a TB can register as owning them, and then letting trainers, breeders, etc. know that we will hold a list where the horse they bred/raced might just be on it.

Will keep you posted if we hear anything back.

Meant to have said earlier on, but getting trainers/breeders to go into NED or any other such pedigree query site, would be a total waste of time - most of them would never have heard of these sites - TBs means Weatherbys to them.

Have notified Weatherby's about my new boy. As far as I'm aware, it's a legal requirement from DEFRA that you notify Weatherby's (or whoever your passport issuing authority is) of change of ownership (could be wrong!)

My TB has lost his Weatherby's passport and is now with the Horse Passport Agency. Did contact a very helpful lady at Weatherby's and she can re-issue me one (through his chip number) but its a little pricey at £95. That is on my Christmas list - and she will help me trace his race record.

If you do know his actual registered name, to get his racing records (plus sales record, relatives, etc.) is very easy to do. If you know it, let us know and we can look it all up for you (unless someone else gets in first with the same access to records as us).

If your horse already has a passport issued, it is illegal(well not sure about illegal but against Defra rules) to replace it with a different one.

I know several horses with 2 passports. 1 foreign, 1 English.

I have a TB mare but she is registered with the Irish Horse Board but she does have a weatherbys passport. In order to inform them I presume you have to be a member of weatherbys and that costs too much just for one horse.Jim Bolger bred mine and I keep an eye on the mares family but TBH he has soo many I am sure he wouldn't care to know that she is breeding eventers.

with my mare i contacted the breeder once i got it and they were overjoyed to know where she ended up and i regularly send them photos of her doing well. with my boy he also came with a horse passport agency and i would have to pay alot of money for a wetherbys one which i can't not afford. i didn't duplicate it so i'm sorry but i'm not at fault imo.

I notified Weatherby's when i bought my TB.
Although, i am the first registered owner on the passport (apart from breeder) even though he's been sold on several times before i bought him. Weatherby's still had him as being in Ireland on their records!

How do you trace the breeder?
I have breeders name and stud but the only contact i have is their email and they never reply. They probably don't care, but it could be that it is an old email address!

Nope

I did print off the form and everything, but needed his passport for going eventing at the time and have run out of money for everything but absolute essentials since then!

Yep I did register within the required 6 weeks or so (I think) that you need to do it.

Think it cost about £15 but didn't think twice about it cos thought it was a requirement when you buy a new horse any way??!

Weatherbys won't give you addresses of the breeders, but if you write a letter they will pass it on to the breeders for you. Hope you get a response. Sadly, as we said, we never did from breeders over in Ireland of one of our mares.

I recently purchased a TB and have now notified Weatherbys - cost £11.50 ( I think) - and took about 5 days for passport to be returned - I did get a bit of a snotty note from them reminding me that under new EU regs changes of ownership must be noted on the passport within 30 days ( I took 40

) but considering I am the horses first registered owner on the passport I'm not sure they can morally complain!
