Hello,

I've noticed a few people on here have ex-racehorses and was just wondering if you bought them at auction?

I have a friend who is thinking about taking on an ex-racer but i'm a warmblood person and have no idea where to begin looking lol.

Any good sales or auctions in the UK that would be worth a look? Any that should be avoided? She's not looking to spend a fortune, probably 2500 at most. Is this a realistic price or would she be looking at a lot more money than this?

Hi
Most of the ex-racers that I have worked with have come direct from a trainers yard but I do also know of several people who have picked them up from auctions.
The 3 main auctions in the UK are (listed in generalised order of quality)...
Tattersalls - Newmarket, this is generally speaking the highest quality sale.
Doncaster Bloodstock sales
Brightwells auctions at Ascot - horses tend to sell for less here

If your friend decides to go down that road then I would suggest taking someone very experienced with you who has done this before.

Has your friend thought about getting a horse through one of the RoR supported rehoming charities such as HEROS, TRC etc? Here is a link http://www.ror.org.uk/network_centres.asp
Also Darley have just started a rehoming scheme, here is a link http://www.ror.org.uk/news_article.asp?newsID=375

She may also find this website very helpful for advice, information and ex-racehorses looking for a new home

Best of luck to your friend in finding an ex-racer, they are well worth the effort!
