He had been retired from breeding after the 2009 season due to declining fertility. After experiencing complications following surgery to remove a large lipoma, the 25 year old Stallion was euthanized on 7th September. He has been buried next to Diesis at Mill Ridge Farm Kentucky.
A grade 1 winning son of Mr Prospector out of a Secretariat mare he won $682,251. Retiring to stud in his 4th year he has left a strong legacy in that 32 of his sons and grandsons are listed in The Blood-Horse Stallion Register of 2009.
His most notable horse in the UK was the ill fated but talented Zafonic, and in the USA his son Elusive Quality was 2004 leading sire the year. He is the sire of Smarty Jones (US champion 3-year-old winner of the Kentucky Derby and Preakness) and last years Breeders Cup Classic winner Ravens Pass.
Gone West spent his entire stud career at Mill Ridge Farm KY, who also stand his Breeders Cup Winning son Johar.
On a somewhat brighter note Mill Ridge board La Ville Rouge dam of the ill fated Kentucky Derby Winner Barbaro, here is a link to his Family, He has an 09 full brother (already been to the vets!) and his full brothers Nicanor (06) and Lentinor (07)are in training, Nicanor broke his maiden on the turf this year just as his illustrious older brother did!
