The new horse has arrived and I've noticed his back legs below the hock are really scabby and yucksome. What's the best way to clear these scabs up? Some are old racing injuries and the scabs I can quite easily pull off.

The other ones are tiny yellow ones right next to the skin under the hair and all over the leg. Would it be best to wash with hibiscrub and give a really good brush with a dandy brush or something? Although he's quite a wimp and I think that might hurt so any other ideas? I hate seeing him all scabby being used to horses with lovely clean legs!!

Make sure his diet is right for a start; all skin problems like that always come from inside (as opposed to wounds). I would bathe in a weak solution of Hibicrub gently rubbing scabs as you go with a circular motion (they seem to tolerate that better than a pick at the scab); dry well (but gently) then apply any skin cream (Protocon, Sudacrem, zinc & castor oil, anything like that) Don't wash again but use more cream and they should soon slough off.
Don't use a dandy brush, would be far too harsh. As I say, get the diet right and the skin will come right. Brewers Yeast is good for skin and it helps with flies too.

Don't use a harsh brush on them...if anything like my tb mare...you would take the skin off completely and my mare would hate me forever!!...they tend to be very fine skinned.
Only use gentle wash solution as this could irritate the skin and cause soreness.
Sudocream is good...I also use a soothing wash on my girl for no other reason than to re-fresh her skin - i used to use it on her legs after riding her with her boots on, as these could make her fur come away a bit.
Try not to cover them up much...fresh air helps!!!

Someone once said to coat the gunky scabs with lard overnight first, meant to soften them. never tried it, but can't imagine it would do any harm.

I had a TB with scabby skin and he hated me going at them with Hibi etc. I fed him something from Pegasus Herbs called Global Skin Mix and it cleared him up in 2 weeks, I did nothing else! I'd recommend the stuff to anyone (and often do)!

My mare has a scabby patch on the frount of both her hind legs, they were from an old jumping injury that never healed properly. I asked our vet about them and she said that by 'scrubbing' them I could do more damage than good. She advised to wash them with anticepic. I did that but the scabs came back. they dont cause any plain to mt girl so I'm happy to leave them as they are. As she is a jumper it doesnt really bother me.
