...............out of interest please? just wondering the conformation of the tb mouth makes them as a general rule happier in one mouthpiece over others?
My tb hates jointed bits, so I find whatever bit I want to use, it needs to have a straight bar mouthpiece. I find he is happiest in a loose ring straight bar snaffle, but if I know I am doing something where he will get strong, I have a dutch gag (bubble bit) but also with a straight bar mouth piece, which I hunted high and low for but it works!
Again I've tried lots of bits - my instructor has nicknamed me 'the bitbank'!!
The bit he's best in is a Sprenger Duo 2 ring dutch gag - basically a very soft rubber straight bar mouthpiece.
If I do dressage (not v often!) then its a nathe bit - I've got several, so change the bit frequetly - as he gets 'used' to one if used for more than a couple of weeks.
The other bit I've had good success with is the Neue Schule Verbindend (sp?). I think this works as it's a really nicely curved 'thin' mouthpiece.
I found my x racer worked best also is a straight nathe snaffle. Its literally bendy and is quie thin. It wasnt to expensive but i did find if i was going out on a fun ride best swap to a happy mouth as the nathe material can sometimes burn the cornes of her lips if she got a bit strong
Mine's in a hanging cheek for dressage, then a tom thumb with sweet iron and copper roller things in the middle for all jumping. The iron/copper mix helps him to really soften as he;s prone to throwing his head in the air when he sees a jump.
I alternate between a hanging half cheek/waterford or loose ring snaffles, has to have a lozenge/link in it as he hates the nutcracker action.
I only alternate as find he leans on the half cheek and the loose ring, so once he does that I swap over for a couple of weeks.
