Teaching a horse to lead from another

How would be best to go about this?
My horse is a perfect lead horse, I've led many times off him. My second horse is fine to ride on the roads but not so great to lead from foot (ie a few times for one reason or another I've had to dismount and lead home) he's been very fresh and a real handful- this may well be because its always been after an incident of some sort?
I thought maybe get someone of follow on foot or bike who could step in if I can a problem or practise in the field (but will this be realistic of how it will be on the road?)
Life would be so so much easier if this was possible!
 
I kind of just got on with it and didn't really teach my two anything.

When I had my mare she was happy as a lead horse but hated being the ridden horse for some reason (but wasn't any problem hacking her out on her own).

The two I have now are fine but do squabble a lot and the ridden one does get very aggressive if son's pony moves up too far (both quite like being the lead horse :rolleyes:) Pony is great and drops back and doesn't seem to mind a set of teeth coming at her head :eek:

To test them prior to venturing out on to the road I just rode them around the field once or twice. You soon get to know whether it's going to work out or not ;)

I think if you just get on with it in a no nonsense way it's relatively easy but then maybe I have tolerant horses / ponies and have had it easy?
 
I gave done several seasons as a hunt groom and had plenty of green horses or that hadn't been hunt horses and most pick it up very quickly. Generally by the time we got up the drive which was about half a mile! Lazy ones are the worst! I actually found it easier than riding one out alone.
 
Ok Thanks, I just gave it a go this afternoon. Went surprisingly well until h2 (being led) decided to plant himself- This is not normal behaviour for him out on a hack although it has been years ago in hand.
Eventually had to turn and head home where he became a bit boisturous but no problem hes not strong so just jogged along side.
I trotted back past our yard not wanting him to thing he got away with not working and we carried on that way for a short while then home. This was a good success they both behaved in trot and walk and im now perfectly confident that riding and leading will work other than the planting bit. Obviously dragging a planted horse never works so what there???
