Teaching a Horse to Lunge/Long Rein

Depends on the type and 'size' of the youngster. If a very 'weak' horse then only 10 mins of gentle walk and an odd trot from 2 years +, however if more of a strong type then you could do a bit more.

Wouldn't LUNGE lunge until about 2 + (meaning walk/trot)
Possibly teach to go round in a circle in a controlled walk a few months earlier, and same with longreining.
But if its a tb/arab somthing light id leave it to 2 1/2 or 3

Hope this helps

Teach them to lead from the off side, if not already done so.
Attach lunge rein to headcollar and turn you back on them, slowly getting further away and more 'behind'.
Majority of horses will pick this up really quickly, and lunge good as gold each way within 3 days.
