Teaching a horse to tie up

Hi,
I would really like to start teaching my filly to tie up this weekend and am wondering the what is the best way to do this? Have heard many different ways but would like to hear the experiences you lot have had in teaching this, and how the horse has reacted.
Would be grateful from any advice

I was very lucky with my filly she took to it great but I tied her up on same tie ring as her mum so they were together she was only 3 months and when I tied them away she was great, I know this is not a option for some.
 
We never seem to teach them to tie up perse - we just do it. Never before 2 years old though. We've never had a problem, but they are always tied to bailer twine just in case.
 
When I got my youngster i used 2 ropes tied to 2 bits if string one longer than the other. If she did pull back and snap the string she was still tied up. I then retied the first one. This way she never actually got loose and soon got the message, hope this makes sense.

i always put the rope thru the ring first holding the end and let them feel a bit of tension , do this a few times and then gradually work up to tie propely, i never leave them alone tho, this has always worked well with all my youngsters, have an 8mth old colt at the moment that stands brill
 
I started off by splitting bailing twine, to say like, two or three strands and tieing him to that, so if he panicked and pulled back the twine would break and he would be lose, only did this in the stable. As he got used to the feeling of being tied up i made the twine thicker so it wouldnt break so easily, so at least if he pulled back it would give him a little tug, so as to show him that he'd got nothing to be frightend of really.
After a couple of times he excepted it, he never pulled back cause he never had anything to be frightend off.

Thanks everyone, prob thinking about it more than i need to, am also wondering why to not tie up before two as my filly is 9 mths. Thought i had to do it sooner rather than later as she is getting alot bigger and stronger daily!

I always start with a very long lead rope and just thread it through the baling twine and hold the other end to see if youngster is going to panic. I usually combine tying up with feed time for the first few times and that seems to really help

It's never something I've had any problems with, although I have one 7 year old who knows just how much pressure he needs to exert to burst the baling twine!

Dunno really - just seems to be the policy. They seem to be more sensible, less likely to panic at minor things and just accept it better. Probably over cautious.
 
One of our lads least endearing habits is that he objects to being tied up, particularly in the stable. We thought he was just very well behaved when the previous owner left him loose with the rope over his neck for vetting/blood test! A tip I picked up was to loop a piece of old tail bandage (stretchy sort) between baler twine and lead rope. If they pull back instead of meeting resistance they get a lot more give and don't fight it. It has worked for him so might be a good idea for starting a youngster.
