So following on from recent posts about people teaching "airs above the ground" and tricks to their ponies, my daughter has been teaching a far more useful skill to her pony.....

She is teaching her to read!! I went into her stable last night and mini S was showing her pony picture books (of the A is for apple variety) substituting more suitable words so the pony would understand (B is for bridle etc) Pony just stood there with a completely bemused expression on its face while daughter did this. She then proved that the pony had indeed learned to read by sticking a label with her pony's name on it on her stable door and my horse's name on his stable door. She then takes the pony out of the stable and lets her go between the two boxes. Lo and behold, the pony takes itself back into the correct stable, clearly because she has read the label on the door....

Oh to have had a camera!!

She's 6, and clearly reading is a very important skill for all ponies!! Maybe, as the recent preloved ad shows, she could teach reading to all ponies for £100 / day?!?! We'd be loaded!!!!! :D

Oh the joy of being a little girl with her beloved pony! The things I used to teach mine were unbelievable. Treasure this time because they grow up so fast, only seems yesterday my 2 were 6 now they are all grown up. Remember your camera next time!

Thanks RNF, she adores the pony and they do some really cute stuff together. Unfortunately if I took the camera up every evening I'd never get the mucking out done! ;)

Great idea!!! Where do you live? I will pay you in buttons (Chocolate ones!!!!) :p

Thanks SJ,can I request white ones (or wine. Wine is good!!)

Don't you just love them! That is just sooo sweet!!
My daughter when she was 7/8 didn't go quite as far as teaching them to read but she did use to read her pony a bedtime story(usually winnie the pooh).Luckily pony was really good as she would on occasion nod off doing this.Other livery in stable behind said they used to hear her.

EEEP! Hope my horse doesn't hear - we have enough problems out hacking as it is without having to worry about Woozles and Heffalumps lurking in the bushes!!!

Indeed treasure the innocent stuff, I deeply regret being cross when gleaming grey Sec A was ' rinsed' with red food colouring to make him pink! Things move on.... traipsing the country looking for a SJ superstar, then having to get a bigger box because the 17hh warmblood will not fit in.... paying more for a saddle than I have ever paid for a horse of my own. This list goes on!

I will be hiding this post from her so as not to give her ideas - her favourite colour is pink......
As for the rest, am determined to keep her grounded so one step at a time! She has already rushed round to all her friends telling them she jumped bigger than me!! (I was schooling over canter poles at the time *rolley eye smiley - don't know how to do them!)

Join the queue........... I neeeeeeed THAT show jacket, I've done so well this year.... OK, my new winter coat will be an outlet centre buy again..

No complaints, we had loads of fun and I have a very guilty memory - forgot small person behind me whilst gossiping and popped over biggish log, to see small person wrapped around pony's neck as he bravely banked the log... have been forgiven now though.

If only I could have taught mine to count and read numbers, such as the ones on the fronts of the jumps...

There has been research into this, horses can learn lots of words, descriptions, nouns and verbs, to the point where they could find out which colours they can distinguish, I read something years ago by Marthe Kiley Worthington (I think)

I love your mini me's logic, she's destined for a bright future!
