Right, new man used to ride as a kid but has taken an interest again. He's been on Ty a few times and had a canter round (doesn't realise that kicking him on makes him go faster!)

I'm going to get my yard owner to teach him but he wants a few lessons with me first. i'm happy with the basics of seat etc but thinking that lunge lessons would be a good starting point - take the reins away and get him balancing properly.

What do you think?

Yes, I know he should be having proper lessons from the off, but he's a man, has his pride and wants to be doing a decent rising trot before he starts his lessons! xxx

Lunging is probably the best way to go - especially as his man-ego would probably be a bit dented by being led round!

Have fun!

I tried leading him around and after 5 mins he wanted to be let loose.

Irony is Ty was so gentle with him! When we went into a canter he lost his balance and Ty immediately slowed down! Ahhhhh bless my boys heehee

They always like that aren't they! My old horse is so well behaved with novices - it's just me he used to play up for!

Lunging is good for starting adults off. You can always get a neckstrap or similar for him to hold rather than the reins and he can work on getting into the right position.

LOL well as many of your know Ive been teachng my OH to ride......only do it if you have a strong relationship!

At first all we did was argue, OH said its impossible to get heels down, to rise and trot etc, now he can walk trot and canter by himself and goes out hacking, not bad for one lesson a week on a weekend.

However I would not suggest trying to teach a newish boyfriend, I was constantly nagging my OH to stop pulling on my babies mouths etc! I think it became apparant who I was most concerned about!

When OH was taken off with he wasnt impressed with me shouting 'whatever you do, for gos sake dont fall off because he will run off'. apparantly I wasnt concerned about his safety at all, and?!

Oh he knows where my priorities lie I'm afraid! Hence the reason I want to lunge him and take his reins away! He's got a good seat though so being an annoying man I don't think it will take him long. He used to jump a bit too so not as novice as he made out.

Only problem is, he thinks it's funny when he nearly falls off

I've not time to add much, but all I will say (having taught my hubby for the past 3 years!), is prepare yourself to hear the phrases :

IIII AAAAAAM!!!
IIII KNOOOW!!!
very often, and learn how to sigh and smile sweetly!!

LOl - been there! I'm quite patient so we should be ok - unless he hurts my baby.

Then he dies.

he said the other day he'll buy a horse when he earns a six figure salary.

I told him I'd marry him when he earns a six figure salary! xx

Hmm he is too confident! A ride on Ty on a naughty day will sort that out LOL.

ditto the annoying man, now my OH asks me why I havent been riding much at weekends...er because ive spent all my bloody time teaching you thats why!

Ive told him he has to ride Lance this weekend, he has always been scared to ride him, he is type of horse where if you cant ride, then hold on!

Still OH has SO much confidence now, he reckons he is ready!

I'm waiting for naughty Ty day I have to admit. Thing with Ty is that in the school he's pretty ok - I will be taking him up the downs if he keeps up the bravado though

I love to get my OH on a horse so he could see how hard it is!!

We are supposed to be going trekking sometime this summer if I nag hard enough lol.

Well he suggested that we go ranch riding in America on holiday.

I kid you not.

This could be a relationship made in heaven! haa haa x

I taught my OH to ride when we first met nearly 6 years ago. My old boy would play me up something stupid but when OH got on he did exactly as he was told.
It did get rather difficult though as being a typical man he knew best!! Wouldn't be led / lunged, so I went the next step and borrowed my friends highland and went for a hack out. Said highland then bolted and taught OH to stay on ....... for a while!!
I must say though I never really taught him we just had small hacks out together or with me walking / cycling and I just gave him tips.
He now has his own horse and when possible we ride out together which is great. OH loves his XC and hunting and I love dressage and SJ so it works really well. I groom for him and him for me.
Being thrown in at the deep end really helped him learn being stuck in a school or field together really didn't work.

Good luck can't wait to see piccies.

BTW glad your keeping Ty now, such good news.

OMG stop this now!!!!

I stupidy taught an ex showjumper how to ride my dressage horses and regret every minute!!!! He now thinks he can ride better than me!!

Men, just take them to the pub and buy them a meal every so often by my advice..... NEVER teach them to ride. Stable management, fine, they will always think they can do it better than you so fine let them get on with it but ride... well thats's a different story.......

Why are boyfriends so gung ho about riding!?

I put my boyfriend on my pony, his first ever time on a horse and said I'd walk round the school with them, he said "No thanks" and off they went at super fast trot, bounce bounce bounce. The next time he gets on he just keeps kicking and off they go in canter. He says he has to learn by trial and error. It's a good thing my pony is patient (although does clearly think it's hilarious!).
