I would like to start running again and what better way than to take my 2yo dog out with me to help him burn some energy. But at the minute it would just blow his mind and he would pull me over, how can I train him to run alongside me without pulling?!

Does he walk nicely at the moment? You need to get that down before you start running with him.

I have mine in a 'pelham' :wink3:

He has one 'rein' on the Halti and one 'rein' on the 'snaffle' (collar) and it works fantastically.

good idea! at the mo he pulls in walk too :(

I think you would need a really good not pull at walk and then slwly increase it. Maybe someone who does Canicross could advise?

My Gsd used to pull in walk but with running after the first 5 minutes he settled to heal really well with me.
I got a running belt so I didn't have to hold the lead

caniX is the way to go, the running belt is worn just above the hips (not in the small of your back) and the line is a bungee line.it is really comfortable and stable and has the above poster wrote, they do settle.
i am new to it but find it great fun.
there are lots of local groups for all abilities on fb and will often lend you gear to try before you buy.

Yes I never did actual Cani-cross with my last dog as he was too reactive and would not cope. But he was very comfortable in his harness from a Cani-cross website and the bungee lead and waist belt makes it way more comfy to run for you then a lead in your hand.

Going to give it a go with my new dog though as she loves running with my husband and I need to get fit

Just try it somewhere safe and see how he goes, most dogs even ones that pull work better in a forward migration speed. They tend to zone in and relax .

Can you run on countryside trails away from roads? I have occasional bursts of running with my dog but he stays off lead and just runs alongside (or in front usually). If you have to keep yours on a lead then the cani-x belts and bungee lines are great.

Both our labs can have a tendency to pull when walking without keeping them told to heel etc but when running they both trot along by our side not pulling just at a nice pace, I think walking is too slow for them!!

Would definately recommend canicross if your dog has lots of energy & you like to run. Working in harness uses approx 4x more energy too. Find out if there are any local groups (Facebook is a good place to look) as some will keep kit boxes so you can try different kinds of harnesses before buying - they'll also keep you right in terms of surfaces, temperatures, hydration, training etc. You can teach them commands such as "steady" & "wait" if you need to slow them down or stop them.

For suppliers, as well as K9 Trailtime, check out SASS Sled Dog Equipment, & Trailbaby Sled Dog Equipment (on Facebook).
