to stand still while mounting? Have just got an 8 year old IDX who I have to chase round with the mounting block as he just won't stand still. Unfortunately I don't have anyone to hold him, and I can't get on from the ground due to a medical condition. I am very conscious of ensuring I don't dig my toes in his ribs or land heavily on him, I just think he's having a bit of a laugh! Any tips please?

Just keep moving him back to the block - try not to chase him with it! Leave the block still and move him back to it every time, just make him stand next to it without getting on, then stand on the top next to him, then put foot in stirrup etc. Everytime he moves circle him tightly away and back to the step. FB got very bored very quickly and decided it was better to stand still so we could go out.

Start with small steps, that is, don't try to get on but try to get him so stand still for a few seconds, then reward him and move him away to do something else. Increase the length of time, then add you standing on the mounting block, then add your foot in the stirrup, and so on until you build up to getting on. It takes a few days but it's worth it!

What about feeding him polo for standing still then progressing slowly to standing over him etc .Once mounted you could give him polo for being good.If he moves his hind quarters place wheelbarrow at side of block.Positive reinforcment
