HELP PLEASE!! Weve previously only ever had rescue doggies who are a bit older and can therefore walk on a lead on arrival.. however i got a little whippet pup a few weeks ago and up until now he has only been walked in our field without a lead, It hadnt even entered my mind that he wouldn't walk on a lead

oopie! So i had a go last week and he just doesnt have a clue, he either plants himself and trys to get loose (usually successfully) or throws himself around and chews the lead. I have been trying every day to tempt him to heal with treats etc (he walks to heal nicely without the lead) So after this ramble my question is please can i have some tips on getting him to walk nicely on the lead??

This is the wee devil exhorsted from all the fighting with the evil lead!!

p.s should probs say i am using one of those rope leads that just loops round the neck and gets tighter when pulled.. im sure there is a more technical name!!

Thanks in advance

Start in the house and garden and let the lead trail, but always supervise, even jsut the feel of the lead and collar can be very daunting let alone walking and taking in the sorroundings at the same time.
Let him trail it and call him and treat him or coax him with a toy, then gently take hold, then jsut drop it, until u are eventually gently coaxing him towards u for the treat but doing it via the lead, this way he has no outside distractions to deal with, repeat this until u can call him and gently tug the lead at the same time, this way he assosiates a positive for coming to u via the lead.

This wat by the time u go out he has had a fair few sessions in the house with it trailing and u gently coaxing him to u.

Don't use the rope lead he is to young for that and the tightening will frighten him, esp as his instincts are to pull back, the rope leads are for fully trained non pulling dogs, use a light weight puppy collar and lead for now.
Also when u take him out, let him prance along beside you and distract him with a tasty smelling treat in your palm and let him take it every now and then or a raggy toy this will distract him from the lead and he will assosiate walking beside u with getting treats and toys, not being strangled and pulled forward

What Caila said, let him learn in the house and garden first, letting it trail around and then you pick it up now and then (with supervision, of course) and not on a slip lead.

TBH most baby pups, while they benefit from knowing HOW to walk on a lead, don't need a huge amount of on-lead walking.

Also, while it is hilarious when pups play with the lead, it is not funny when they are older so please try not to encourage him or giggle at him, no matter how hard it is not to

Cheers everyone for your advice, I'll use all those techniques for sure! i only have clip on lead in a very fetching shade of pink!! might have to get him a more suitable colour so as to avoid bullying from the other dogs!!
