My riding instructor is so popular its realy difficult to pin her down to a lesson, so am about to start looking for a new one (no lesson since July!). I have taken a few details at our feed mechants but I dont know what the letters mean - could any one help me out

I have a BHS AI and a BHS PPT, what does this mean, what others 'letters' are here? I know that qualifications are not everything, our last instructore wasnt even that qualified, she just seemed to say things in a way I understood (simple lol).

AI is BHS Assistant Instructor. PTT is Preliminary Teaching Test, which is basically just below. BHSII is BHS Intermediate instructor, one up from AI, and BHSI is the next one up, being Instructor, FBHS is fellowship of the BHS, these are specialists and top of the rankings. Here it is simplified

BHSPTT
BHSAI
BHSII
BHSSM (Stable Manager)
BHSI
FBHS

TBH I would make it a priority to find someone you get along with, before worrying wha exams they've got. It's a good way of reassurng yourself that they know what they are doing though.

Can you ask around, as well, and see if anyone recommends their instructor ? I am a teeny bit pee'd off with BHS instructors at present, due to a rather bad experience, and have had some of my best and most effective lessons in a VERY long time from someone who has no BHS teaching quals at all

Just to add, there are some brilliant AIs out there, and some Fellows who may occupy a pedestal, but can't actually teach!

imo you are best finding someone you "click" with more than anything. I train with a Fellow, who in fact is amazing but not everyone's cup of tea, and an AI, who should be more but doesn't want to do the exams. Both pretty much teach the same way, so I don't find myself doing different things with different instructors. Good luck.
