I have 2 youngsters - an 8 month old and a 3 year old. Both pretty much at the same stage of handling as the 3yr old came to me in august after being found by the police in a sorry state. 3yr old is still quite nervous, but quick to learn once he trusts you. 8 month old isn't phased by anything and is a really super little chap.

I plan on doing inhand showing with the baby at least this year and possibly the 3yr old to get him out to see the sights even though he is no where near show quality.

They both lead well, but not sure now to teach them to trot inhand.

I taught mine by touching (would never hit!) him with a stick or just swishing it and starting to run as we went. It didn't take long: the biggest issue was leading from the wrong side for showing purposes and steering!

Kaiser didnt really understand, so a friend shook a bottle with a few stones in it behind him, and i said 'trot on' and started to jog. He picked it up quickly, and now trots easily

Take the lead rope with some slack. First teach them to walk out in hand. Look straight forward (Not at the horse)to where you want to go and give them the command to walk on in a good strong voice. Once they have mastered this just increase your walking pace until you are jogging then running.

They will soon learn to trot out well.

You must keep looking forward so that you keep them straight. This also makes sure you have your space and they have theirs.

This is how we teach all our Arabs to trot out for the vet at an event.
