Trying to teach my youngster trotting poles , have them mastered at walk on lunge, walks over calm and relaxed but at trot just jumps the lot, that's four in a row, scared to add more incase he jumps but lands on one hurting himself, tried one, he jumped it, added another and so on till got to four thinking he would soon work it out but nope just jumps them

Tried on his back at trot , same he jumps them.

Any ideas..???

How far apart are they? My horse used to do this when I was rehabbing for kissing spines, start with one pole, then add a second but in the place the third would be, then there is a step where there should be pole. Also think about using a Pessoa at the same time as this will encourage him to look down at the poles to trot over rather than jumping them. When he is happy going over two with a space on both reins add another pole at the end not the middle one, add this one only when he manages the three. Also remember to give lots of praise when he does get it right. It will come but can take a bit of time for them to get the idea of what you want from them.

Try leading him over at a walk, just to show him it is possible to take them one at a time, before trying it at a trot. I suspect he doesnt quite understand what he is meant to be doing.

Walk is no problem at all, trot he just jumps even when twice the distance apart, guess we just need to keep at it and hopefully he will eventually get it, thanks guys

Not the same I know, but when we go to gridwork clinics we start by trotting down a line of about 20 poles! My loon starts leaping about trying to jump them but I'n told to just sit there an let her gr on with it, and by the 3rd time down she has soon realised it's less effort to just do as she's supposed I and trot down them. Lunging trotting poles is not easy as placing them accurately for striding is tricky.
