Tear of the stifle meniscus - prognosis/experiences please!

My 10yr old mare has been intermittently lame behind for a couple of weeks and was nerve blocked revealing stifle lameness. Was scanned today and a tear in the stifle meniscus was obvious. Had HY50 injected into the joint and now on box rest for 3 weeks before another examination. Does anyone have any experiences of this injury as I am told that it is quite rare?

Horse on our yard has it, he was recently scanned again after about 12 mths and sorry to say the tear is still there. He is however sound and fit for general hacking without any drugs. His owner hasnt rode him since it happened so I cant say how long he would stay sound if she started riding him again.
