Hi all, remember my baby Teddy 2 Shoes? Not so much of a baby now though!

He suffered from numerous abscesses in all four hooves from a very young age. In the beginning I just thought it was a one off but by the time he was gelded at 6month old, he'd had at least 8 abscesses and the vet found a further 3 in 3 separate feet whilst he was under general anaesthetic. My heart sank and I began to realise something was seriously wrong. I questioned what I was doing wrong and spoke to my horse vet and my farrier on a regular basis. Although they tried to help me, their suggestions were just stabs in the dark. My farrier thought he might have kissing spines, wobblers, side bone...you name it he mentioned it. My vet said he had soft feet and he always would have and suggested introducing biotin once he'd been weaned. I did all that, plus I looked at his diet (forage based) but nothing helped!

I then spoke to Sarah from Forage Plus when Teddy was 17 month old and he'd had over 20 abscesses by then. That phone call saved Teddy's life......literally! Sarah was 99% sure what was wrong with Teddy and advised a diet of vits and minerals to balance his diet. This was an educated guess as I'd not had my forage analysed by this time ( I have now), but with Sarah's experience she was able to recommend what is commonly deficient in most horses with his problem. Overnight his diet changed, my routine changed and I learnt a massive amount. I told myself that I've give Teddy 6 months with me doing all I could to help him.

We are now nearly 6 months down the line and the difference is simply outstanding! He's not had another abscess (touch wood) and his coat is so shiny and silky...I reckon when it's time to back him his saddle will slip off. He's the picture of health and so calm and sensible..... long may that last!
Here he is...growing like a mushroom! He'll be 2 in July!
He was 7 week old here!

Any guesses how big he is now or what he'll end up being? :)

Oh he's gorgeous! Looks a big lad - maybe 15.2 at the mo?? Im rubbish at guessing!!
So pleased for you both. I too am a mineral balancer :) My grazing is shockingly poo (mineral-wise) and i hate to think how deficient in stuff they would be if i hadn't have had it analysed. They're feet have improved so much :)
Good luck with him x

Thanks, Teddy is about 15.1hh at the minute but his bum is a definate 15.2hh!! The transformation in him is simply amazing and I've learnt so much over the past 6 month.

He really was heading for an early grave and it was suggested by several people that that was my only option...I felt that too! Thank god he now has a future!

Thanks everyone!

It was all down to diet and addressing what was clearly a mineral deficiency. The more I learn about how his mam was fed when she was carrying him, the easier it is to understand why he's suffered so much! In Teddys case his mam was being fed silage and cow feed the whole winter before he was born so it won't of helped! He must of had a reduced immune system, even though I fed him correctly. The damage was already done! Not all bad news though, thankfully!

Sarah (forage plus) likened it to a bucket that will always have a small hole in the bottom of it....but if you keep the bucket topped up enough it will always appear full and the small hole will become insignificant. Does that make sense?

What a lovely young horse & how lucky he was to find you :-)

Out of interest, what do you now feed him?

Good luck with him.

Cocorules - I have the analysis if you'd like it emailed to you. I got my hay done not the grass as yet. To be honest I can't exactly understand it all and he's not just being fed one mineral, he's on a receipe of about 10 different ones at different levels. Sarah from Forage plus is excellent at explaining it all and has provided my with a wealth of knowledge. I'd really recommend her book Performance Barefoot!

Hazyxmas - Thanks for your kind words. I feed him a recipe especially designed for him of about 10 different minerals which I make up once a week into 7 bags and use one per day. They smell and probably taste awful so I mix them with 200g of wheat bran, 400g of high fibre nuts and 200g of fast fibre. I mix all the dry ingredients together than add the soaked fast fibre. Mix really well and if I have to I add pureed apple. He's eating it really well now but at first he hated it! Bless him! This will change as he matures and need less minerals as his growth and development slows down. Its not cheap but no where close to the cost of vet and farrier bills I was paying....I think I own a share in animalintex! LOL
