Hi all, a friend had her mare’s teeth done a few weeks ago, since (on and off) she is putting her head to the side and down while eating such things as carrots. She seems to be trying to get the pieces from the inside of cheek. I have felt all along her jaw etc and she has no swelling nor discomfort. And there is no foul odours from her mouth any ideas?

My friend had her mare's teeth done and after that she could not eat properly, the senior vet came out and said the horse needed to go to the horspital because she had gaps between her teeth that food was getting stuck in. Since then the horse had to go to the horspital each year to have a mega serious jobbie done by a specialist. They said it would resolve itself.

Thanks Big Red but I dont see that we have the same problem, She eats fine just from time to time she does this when eating carrots, she is eating everything else like feed, hay, pony nuts etc totally normal

My mare looks like a hamster on one side with food pack in the cheek, with her it's her age and her teeth have done a bit of displacing so instead of them running in a relatively straight line there are 4 teeth where the point to the outside or the inside of her mouth causing food to get trapped. (bit difficult to decribe without a picture)
She went in 2 years ago to try and sort the problem and they have done as much as they can without putting her under completley (at 23yo they don't feel it would benefit her that much), we just stick our fingers in from time to time and make sure it doesn't compact, she's quite happy and gets her teeth done at least once a year.

My new horse can't eat carrots and apples properly, he gets bits stuck and spits them out and pulls funny faces/throws his head aroud. I had the dentist out to have a look, she said his teeth are perfectly fine.

Her only advice was that horses are not designed to eat apples and carrots - they are supposed to eat grass, so obviously some will struggle with harder/arkward shaped treats.

We have an EDT coming to our yard tomorrow I will ask him if I remember.:) I think like the last poster said, horses struggle to eat carrots, if you give a horse a whole carrot in your hand they seem to struggle with the biting through of it, I think its because horses teeth are designed to grind food, not cut it. Like grass, the horse uses its muzzle to pull the grass and its teeth to tear, but if a horse liked a nice juicy steak he wouldn't be able to eat it by cutting into it with his teeth like we can because they are just not designed that way.

Think I've explained that well. Mmmm I just fancy a nice juicy steak now. Instead I have saveloy and chips for tea. :(
