Teeth

Unless you have cause to worry about a specific problem, dropping feed, obvious distress etc I would get them checked out just before you are about to 'mouth' your youngster. The last thing you want is to introduce a bit and cause a hang up due to discomfort because of a dental issue.

Our dentist had a look at Prince when he was out doing the others, & that will be the routine from now on. It is unlikely he will need work, but it will get him used to someone else having a look round his mouth. Prince willl be a 1yr old 3 June, & was looked at at about 5mths.

Our dentist first had a look at Tilly's teeth when she was 2 and a half, when he was out doing the others. If she had had problems with her eating, he would have looked at them before but said there was no need.

That's interesting, my two year old is getting his done for the first time in 1 hour!! I wondered the same thing, but the other horses in the field are geting their's done and I thought, why not? Also he has a wolf tooth

Just thought I would let you know how i got on with the horse dentist.

As soon I as told him my horse was approaching three he said his teeth would be a mess. He said this was common in young horses that had teeth coming through. He had to rasp loads and when he washed his mouth out at the end a bit of blood came out which was from his cut cheeks. poor boy. I have now been able to bit him in full confidence which is great!

He also told me to ignore the wolf tooth as it was tiny and unlikely to be a problem
