teething question

my rising 3 year old cob is teething, he's already lost his incisors, and ive found 3 molars in his stable! he is really mouthy so i give him lots of hay to munch on, over the past week his throat area has been slighlty swollen not that i was overly concerned about it putting it down to the teeth coming through. last night when i got to the stables it was really swollen and the bottom part of both cheeks had swollen too, and its all sqishy not hard. it doesnt seem to both him, and is still eating, drinking and behaving normally although more mouthy than normal.
ive got some bute left over form his mud fever that he had, so i have given him 1 packet last night, and another full packet this morning, the swelling is about half what it was last night , i will give a a 1/2 tonight and 1/2 tomorrow for breakfast... should i be worried or is it completely normal?
no discharge from nostrils and no temperature...
my shetland didnt have all these problems !

Hi Joanne, I would not be happy with there being a lot of swelling. Is there a bad smell from the nostrills or throat? You should expect the mouthing as your horse is going to lose and replace 24 teeth between now and being 5 years old. I would also expect there to be some tenderness and redness in the gums. I have not had any cases where there has been a lot of swelling especially in the throat. If you are worried then I would get the vet to check him out rather than a dentist.

hi kjh, no it doesnt smell... its less swollen in the mornings than it is in the evenings strangely, hes absolutelty fine in himself, the vets coming a week wednesday to the yard for routine vaccs, i'll see how he goes, but it certainly isnt getting worse than the first time it as really swollen, i found a tooth in his stable yesterday looks as if a bits missing, but he's so clumsy he may have trodden on it and broke it?! but it was really sharp under neath and it had blood on, im wondering if thats been wobbly and caught the sides of his mouth?

It actually sounds as if his salivaroy glands are filling - which is quite common at this time of year, and harmless.

However, if you are in any doubt at all give your vet a buzz to double check him.

thanks amymay, do you think keep him on the bute? he's done to half a packet twice a day? he doesnt seem quite as mouthy today...
