Tell me about Crufts please.....

Ok, in brief.....

My husband bought some hospitality tickets for Crufts for the family for Christmas. They are for Sunday 10th March. I have two dogs as we live in a rural area - they are house dogs, but I like them for security as much as anything else. I am very fond of them as individuals, but am not really a dog person and am not desperately keen on other people's dogs. Part of this is because the only dog I had growing up was an OES which bit me twice and I really regarded her as a rather smelly hairy unfriendly creature that happened to live in our house. Sounds horrid, but she was my Mum's dog through and through and never a family dog. I was never even allowed to take her for a walk by myself even as a teenager.

The other reservation I have is all the issues a few years back about Crufts/KC/BBC etc. But the ethical issues are straightened out now aren't they? I am vegetarian on ethical grounds so it is something that concerns me. Not that I want to eat dogs you understand, but just being a responsible animal lover etc.

Sooooo... just trying to psyche myself up for it really. I really want to enjoy it, but have never been before and not really sure how to get the best out of the day. Probably shouldn't post this in AAD, but hopefully you'll be able to convert me. :o:)

well its a Hectic day... sunday.. Ill be tehre with my Afghans and my dane.. come to the discover dog stand two black hairy ones will be mine.. :L

anyway there is LOADS to see... dogs you will neve of seen... a Mexican hairless is great breed i love the big ones.. lol..

there is Obedience, doggy dancing, agilty and flyball.. all that as well as the showing..

plenty of stands with MILLIONS of things for sale.. not Just doggy..

you staying for Best in show?? Thats fab, althou iv never stayed

Wear comfy shoes! Sunday is pastoral and working day, combined with it being the last day so lots of general public, expect it to be pretty crowded. As suggested try and see some of the agility, flyball etc. I think if you have hospitality tickets you will have seats for everything in the main ring including Best in Show, but dare I say it may be a little boring if you aren't madly interested in dogs. Lots of stalls and as asif says not all doggy related, and you can always play spot the eccentric doggy folk (and there are quite a few) and have a giggle at them.:p
 
Thanks everyone. I feel really bad because hubby bought tickets for Blenheim HT which we can't do (previous engagement - on the calendar, but :rolleyes::confused:) and Crufts which I was like, oh, yes, errmmm thank you. :(

I have labs and actually (despite being a veggie!!) love the gun dogs. I don't really have a problem with shooting because the birds live a pretty lovely life until BANG that's it.

Anyway, the pastoral dogs sound good to watch, and obedience, agility and flyball. I tried to get my younger lab jumping over cross poles in the field. I will admit she IS my baby and I do love her. :o But I expended more energy in getting her over the poles than she did, :rolleyes:

Asif - please pm me with your details - I would love to meet you and it would make the day so much more meaningful to know someone competing. :) x

No details.. I am amanda. and if you get to the Discover dogs, find the afghan hound stand.. i am there in the AM, so from 8 till about 12-1pm.. will ALSO have my dane sat there with us anyway..
but if you dont get there in time.. you find out where the great danes are showing, and again.. seeing two black afghans you will know its us haha
 
I am hoping to be there in Sunday to on the Discover Dogs stand. Not sure what time yet though.

Crufts is interesting even if you arent a massive dog lover. There are plenty of trade stands and I guarantee you will find Discover Dogs really fascinating, it's not often you get the chance to see every breed all represented at once (some you will never have heard of!).
 
Ethical issues being sorted, not fully there yet though. Get there early, take your plastic as it is a shoppers paradise! If you look at the Crufts website, you'll see what events are going on, which are free to watch and always good fun. You'll get plenty of food and treat samples, they'll be experts on everything canine there. There are courtesy buses taking you from the car park to the arena or you can walk. If you don't have tickets for the best in show, I suggest you leave by 6pm otherwise you could be stuck in the car park for hours....enjoy the day, it's fun but exhausting!!
 
Sorry for the late response - has been a busy weekend. But thanks to you all for the information - certainly looking forward to it far more now that I know a bit more about what to expect. And Asif - I will try to come and find you! Good luck to anybody competing with your dogs. :)
