For those of you who have used omeprazole,

how long did you feed it for?
do you still use it for maintenance?
how long did it take to see a difference?

Hi not sure if it's your horse or yourself using it, but my dog was very ill last year with bleeding stomach ulcers and he was on it for about 4 weeks until the bleeding stopped.

What form are you using or thinking of is it gasroguard or the Norbrook version

Probably the Norbrook version or if there are any other that people can recommend as it is expensive. I know the patent has expired on Gastroguard so should be more options available.

Is there a difference between each form?

I hope this isn't a dumb question but this has got me thinking I have never had to use it on horses but from what you say it is very expensive. This surprises me as my dogs tablets were pennies but I think I was given the human tablets so why can't you give a horse these, I know you might have to give a lot of tablets but it might be cheaper. Does any one know the answer.

Mainly because it is prescription only and the gastroguard etc is a formulation especially developed for horses stomachs You will be stuck with Norbrook or Gastroguard versions for horses as there does not appear to be any other companies coming forward toi licence their products in the foreseeable future. For reference the Norbrook is approx 30% cheaper at recommended dose rates than GG. Dont be confused by the different pack sizes

I have been prescribed it for what was basically acid reflux, although the symptoms were atypical, mainly very persistant cough and some heartburn. I've had no side effects, took it regularly for a bout 3 months until the symptoms were under control and now just take it for a few days if I start to have a problem. It's a very well tried and tested drug. Didn't know it was prescribed for IBS but then again,I'm not a doctor.

I was given it when I was having a course of chemo, steroids and infliximab infusions for severe Crohns disease. The treatment caused awful acid reflux but the pills worked a treat!

There is such a thing as the cascade - whereby vets can prescribe "non-animal" medicines for use in animals, this is normally used for when there is no suitable licensed alternative therefore a human medicine can be used. As there is for horses, you have to use the Norbrook/GG as it is a specially formulated and licensed product for said species. Pain in the behind, but that's licensing laws for you... gastroguard is the only one I have seen used and with good effect, but horrendously expensive :( Never seen to Norbrook version so be interested in reports!

A mate of mine bought it from the states, £1 a day for powder form, for a horse who was scooped with very bad ulcers.

I know your not meant to but they did it for 18 months and never had a issue, just bought 100 days worth at a time. Vet knew about it and said it was working well so left them to it.

You cant buy from the states as it is POM there too. The product you are talking about comes from India (lol) you are made to feel it is coming from america but its all in the small print on the website. It is illegal to import and cannot go to states either. Do you really risk it!

I have used it on several horses over the years.
Usually for six weeks the first time .
One had it for ten days and then went to a vet day as a guinea pig to show people a horse with ulcers healing they where completely gone .
I do keep some gastroguard on the yard I buy a box when I have some extra money I give it when the sufferers are under extra stress or having danilon.
The vets tell me that now they think a quarter dose is enough for maintainence I usually give a third of a tube .
I have one horse who we give a dose to on a hunting morning thats worked well for him.

I would definitely like to keep it legal! are there any differences between gastrogaurd and norbrook or is it the same the product?

We're not 100% it is IBS - been prescribed it as one of my symptoms is vomiting after a large meal.
