Tell me about Papillons

Anyone on here with any experience of the breed?

Basically my mum is considering a dog for when she retires. This is not going to be any time soon but she really likes the look of these and was thinking she would like to show the dog as a hobby to keep her busy and just wanted people's opinion how whether they make good companions etc. Also will allow plently of time to find a good breeder etc. Mums being sensible and says that it won't happen until she is at home as she doesn't like the idea of dogs being left for hours and will help with training etc.

Ive known 2 and they were lovely happy friendly little dogs, happy to go for a walk or stay in for a cuddle. They both yapped quite a bit but that could have been down to the owners. I have seen them doing agility and they seem to love it. The link above will also give you access to the assurred breeders list.

ive heard it said they are a really fun little dog and a bit like a mini dog with a border collie brain, yes some a fab at agility but can be so light they struggle to tip the see saw. They can also break legs by just jumping off the sofa apparently!

I really like them actually and Im not a huge fan of small dogs but all the ones I have come across have actually been smart, bright little things.

As suggested, fun loving little dogs, need to be exercised and socialised or will end up like a yappy pampered brat, I could imagine like poodles as a toy a breed/small they would do fab at agility as suggested they move very speedy and can jump like fleas but the ones I deal with (ex show) dogs where very well socialised/calm well handled dogs and model citizens, very placid (lots of grooming needed) the one pet one I board is spoilt and as a result can be nippy when she is nervous of anything but thats just lack of socialising and to much carrying around.

Yep, my cousin and his wife have one of the bratty ones! Stupid people, bought the dog as a present for their daughter. It was a typical friendly puppy when they got it but they haven't socialised it, do little training and they leave it home all day. Consequently they have a dog who's nervous of everybody and bites when it feels under pressure. Horrid thing it is now but i feel sorry for it because it's all their fault! She (my cousin's wife) also washes it every day after it's been for a walk as she's anal about cleanliness (god know why they got a bloody dog in the first place! )

Not necessarily a small dog enthusiast, but had a friend who had two, and they were great! Smart, jolly, brave and up for as much excercise as you cared to provide - equally happy to be furry hot water bottles! Think they need coats when it's cold/wet, but fun people. My friend was into showing and had loads of pleasure doing lowish level stuff all over the country. Quite a lot of history to the breed, too. Google them if your mother wld be interested.
