i'm dithering about which to get, never had either. does the plastic snag the skin, are the metal ones better? i've found a pair of stainless steel ones for £16.99 and they look very nice.... but i'll get plastic ones if everyone says they're the ones to go for. Ta.

I prefer the metal ball - I have seen the plastic ones come off. If this happened mid ride then some nasty damage could be done. My favourite spurs are the Stubben soft touch spurs. I have used them on both sharp and lazy horses and they accept them really well.

I have plastic ones just because that's what my girl was used to from her previous rider so I thought I'd start off sticking with that. They've been fine, definitely gentler than normal spurs. I think with the metal ones they 'roll' more than the plastic ones, ie the ball's a bit more mobile under less pressure... Whereas the plastic ones feel a bit more static, more like the ball's there to make the spur blunter and softer rather than more slidey along the side, if you know what I mean? So I guess depends what effect you're aiming for.

I've got the top ones but they both look the same so it depends what length you want and whether you want the rubber on them.

I too have had both and prefer the Mark Todd ones. Had 2 pairs of plastic and both times my knob fell off!! ;) ;)

As an aside, the metal do have a tendancy to jangle a bit, but for me thats a help, as when they don't jangle I know I'm drawing my leg up.
