A collegue at work has just had her 17 year old TB x rayed as he's been lame for a while. Vet saw something in x rays and suggested sidebone. He's currently on 10 days bite then reassessment.

sidebone is meant to settle and not meant to make them lame !!!! my mare has sidebone but it is HUGE the size of a golf ball - vet thinks it is mechanical lameness ie. it is actually in the way of the natural action - she is better uphill than downhill but i decided to retire her - she is now a lovely field ornament and has been for about 8 years - she is no better no worse than she was. She could stroll round the block but it was frustrating and making me ride wonky as she was very one sided due to her action and hated going downhill so she is living a life of luxury in my lovely flat field !!

I tried bute - no change (due to it being mechanical) - magnatherapy boots (not sure if they helped) - cortaflex - made a difference intially but not a cure !

hopefully your friends will be more typical and with time will settle.

My pony has side bone in both front feet, both sides. Thought to have been caused by the gypsys driving her hard before I bought her.. Concussion is thought to be the main cause of it. I competed her for years after without a problem, just gentle road work and not too much trotting on the roads too. Jump on a good surface not on hard ground. Side bone will settle down as said above and not affect the horse lameness wise. My pony is now retired due to ring bone and arthritis, NOT side bone :)
