I am 52 5'6''. Wrong side of 11stone! Love my warmblood BUT he won't hack alone has had loads of health problems is nearly 19 and I want to consider giving him a quieter life.
Could a Highland pony be the ideal last horse. Planning on something youngish. Want to hack mainly but the odd log to jump and bit of showing/prelim dressage maybe too. Pictures appreciated. :)

I want a Highland too!

If yiu are on Facebook look up upperlochton Fergus the hot blooded Highland.
He is amazing and is JFTD on here boy.

No Pics I have a Highland as well as Cleveland Bays and Shagya. He is solid and bomb proof but amazingly light on his feet. One of the instructor's at Gleneagles, who helped train the paralympic dressage team for Athens, had several Highlands and competed them in dressage - they did very well.

Love mine to bits. I went from a warm blood mare who was too much horse for me (although lovely, I should say) to my lovely boy. Hacks all day, never worn a shoe in his life (feet like rock!),lives on fresh air, does everything including a nice dressage test, would pop a fence if needed but not my thing, safe but not a plod.

Perfect pony. I'm 5ft 7 and he's 14.2 but definitely don't look big on him.

Me too, Im 54, just the right side of 11 stone and 5'5 and went from a tb to a highland. He's 14.2 and an absolute dude. Honest, trustworthy, fabulous to hack, can jump but I wont, capable of a working hunter course, the nicest, most amenable character to do anything with, Wouldnt swap him for anything and hope to grow old together!

Not mine, but my friend has one. He is overheight, at 15.2hh. Beautiful dapple grey, very well-schooled. He is literally bomb-proof, and has the kindest nature.
I have a pic somewhere, I borrowed him for a dressage comp. It's taken at an odd angle though, I look about 12. I'll see if I can find it.

Thanks for that just looked- brilliant!

Thank you kindly, both of you :) I wondered why I got a few notifications about new "likes" on their page...

As most folk know, I have two of the little devils. Fergus does dressage and TREC and is my all round plaything when it comes to daft ideas and slightly silly games. Daemon loves jumping, and dressage is just a means to an end with him. Dae's 6 and has been fairly low mileage till this year as he's grown a lot and changed shape hugely, so there's plenty of time for him to grow up ;)

I bought an unhandled 2 year old direct from the stud a few months ago. He was testing the first few weeks but now he is the most amazing loveliest pony ever!!! He's bold, kind has a heart of gold!! I love him and would have another in a shot! I went from having a 16.3hh ID.

He's going to be some unit once he's fully grown.

Hurry up and get one!

Be aware that Highlands vary from safe slow plods suitable for old people and novices to quite sporty forward going performance types that are anything but, like JFTDs!

But all have the same tough easy-care characteristics, lovely soft temperaments, and a sometimes opinionated nature! They take time and won't be forced. Mine live out 24/7 in the Scottish Highlands and the only thing you have to watch is their diet. None are ever sick or sorry, they are easy to manage, and easy to break.

I came to Highlands by accident many years ago when I went to see a mare in a field next to a housing estate. A traditional type, she had little street urchins crawling all over her and was half asleep with eyes almost shut absolutely loving the attention. I didn't buy the pony but that sold me on the breed.

they vary a LOT and the breed has changed imhe over the last 20 odd years. The good old fashioned types that are solid, dependable and easy are still about but you have to be careful and research the line you want, there are a significant number now that are very sharp and all but professional’s rides. All depends what you want of course!

I am 100% in love with my highland and he is definitely my pony of a lifetime. He is a big heavy type by Kincardine Ben Macdhui, but he is very light on his feet and is super at dressage. He is very forward going, will have a go at anything, he's brave and always make me feel safe. On occasions, when he forgets himself, he can be a bit bullish to handle, and he's ruled by his stomach :)
