I have a horse with thin soles (don't get me started, supposedly good farrier whose apprentice trimmed them) who keeps getting bruised on the stony gateways as they dry out. I have been poulticing and it helps but no sooner is he sound than he bruises again. So, how do you use nappies? With vetrap and duct tape over the top, or inside boots? And do they last 24 hours - the animalintex does, with a good "boot" of duct tape. Or do they need a poly bag over them? TIA

When I use them to poultice then I vetwrap over top and then duct tape boot.
How long they last is generally proportional to how much duct tape you use and how thuggish the horse is out!!

If you are just using for protection half a small baby nappy dry, feet do sweat.
Then cohesive bandage, a whole one to cover the sole and up the sides of the hoof to the fetlock.
Then a duck tape woven patch. You do this buy weaving this on a door so you have a flat piece of tape which will go all over the hoof and up the hoof wall.
You then put this on secure with more duck tape.
Then if you have it a really tough piece of plastic to try and stop it wearing at the toe.
I get all the stuff ready and it I can do it on my own, if its not too wet it lasts two days.
There must be a youtube video.

As above. The nappy is just a convenient one-way dressing to provide moisture absorbtion and padding as is a good hoof shape.

In years gone by before nappies and vetwrap and even sticky tape, we would use a poultice, some plastic and then a sack tied with string at the pastern joint and several layers of sacking.

Whatever I put on my horse's foot he always manages to wear through at the toe.

If they are stabled then I put plastic bag over the hoof and then secure that on with duct tape.

If they are going out then vetwrap and duct tape - normally lasts 2 days.

Thanks all - so just using instead of animalintex type poultice then. Is it any thicker than a normal poultice to help avoid further bruising?

Nappies are thicker and cheaper than Animalintex. They also hold together better when wet. When you look what is actually in Animalintex, its mainly marketing.

If it is more than just a simple bruise, ie ongoing bruising, you'd prob. be better off with boots for turnout. You can get through an awful lot of nappies, vet wrap and duck tape, esp. if the weather is wet.
I am using cavallos on a mare of mine for exactly this reason just now, she gets them on to go in the field, and has a decent shavings bed to come in to.
