Dumb alert!

Daughter wants studs for Christmas. I'll be honest I've never used studs in my life!

So whats best to buy and what does she need? She wants them for jumping- new horse does skid around a bit on wet ground. Am I better buying a kit - something like this?

Or in the local tack shop they have everything separate so she can just have the needed bits (or all they all needed bits!)

Thats the kit I have (Mark todd but essentially all the same!), and it covered most possibilities in ground and is an excellent starting place if she doesn't have anything already. I did buy one or two extra sets but only after those got tipped or seeing some other i fancied trying.

The only other things I would add to it to make it a bit more usable is a better tap for getting the dirt out:

Some WD40, and the plugs i used were: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Liveryman...t=UK_Horse_Wear_Equipment&hash=item58b390f6c5

I would probably buy the kit, it is nice to have it in a box and you will need most of the things in it, if you want to just get the basics then you will need a tap, to clean the threads, a spanner to tighten the studs and loosen them, usually the two are in one as in the kit, a selection of studs, a nail to pick out the holes and you can use the rubber keepers to keep them clean between use, I just stuff with cotton wool. Or look at supastuds which don't require the holes to be cleared before use, it will be cheaper to just buy what you really need and keep it all in a nice tin, my stud collection is fairly extensive and wouldn't fit in that little box.

I tend to spend five-ten mins giving them a clean and re-plug the day before, then I stud up for Dr as one of my first jobs, so not stressful. :)

Just a frivolous aside, I raised the subject of studs for my horse once at the yard and was immediately told by another livery"Studs for Lance, that's like giving a hoodie a flick knife". ..... Bitch! He was just misunderstood.... OK she might have had a point!

Granted- for some reason I liked doing it though! Call me a control freak. On the day my husband liked to do the studding up bit for me- think it was one of the few 'manly' (well it involes a spanner...) things he could do to help!
