Ok so a livery at my yard has recently put her horse up for sale and when I heard how much I was utterly shocked.

I will tell you a bit about this horse and could someone please tell me what they think it is worth?

16.1hh 10 year old bay TB mare. Unsure of her past history but no competition record. Bought from a dealer. Very mareish. Sometimes rears when being ridden. Has bolted out hacking with a novice rider. Been out of any real work all winter, now occasionally ridden by confident girl. Has been free schooled over 1m but not seen this under saddle. Hard to say what she's like ridden, have only seen her rearing or walk, trot, cantering ok but doesn't look particularly well schooled.

Thoughts?

Personally, I wouldn't have thought much more than meat money. If the horse rears and bolts then it doesn't really matter what height it will jump loose - if you can't stay on it, it's not worth much.

£2k for a horse that rears & bolts?? Your having a giraffe lol.

Which is why I asked if she will be open about the rearing & bolting. If someone doesn't realise they would be perfectly prepared to pay £2k for this horse.

I think I've missed the point, I was trying to guess what the girl could be asking rather than the true value :o

I would have thought £400 - £600. Sounds to me like the horse would benefit from some consistency in her work.

I was just trying to give a fair description.

The mare is advertised for 3.5k!! And no mention of rearing or bolting. Infact, the ad states it is suitable for a novice. The current owner is a novice herself and the reason she is selling the mare is because she is terrified of her. Even to lead.

Put it this way, I've just bought a 7 year old TB mare, good breeding lovely kind nature. Sweet to handle, quiet to hack out, jumps like a stag and is learning to school nicely. Only vice is she is terrified of the beach (which living near beaches is a small issue) but she's quick to learn so no doubt that will be sorted out.

How much did I pay?

£200.

Sounds like a nice expensive court case in the making......

Iv known people do this as well and actually know off I horse for sale which has serious issues which they will not tell. I really get me and f..ks me off. Totally out off order

Sorry yes, i think i missed the point :)

That is a total disgrace, there is a full reason why there is known to be such dishonesty in the horse world.
How can she even think of letting novices try this horse out, what will she do when they ask her to ride the mare first, dope it.
Disgusting

Lol! Yes only raced twice bought from a local trainer cos the owner dumped her and he was sending her for meat!! Now on loan to a 16 year old girl who is going great guns with her and she's amazing! Doing her first show in 2 weeks and we're expecting great things because she's a stunner! :D Very proud of my unwanted girlie I must admit...just wish I was brave enough to ride her but she's too skinny and fast for me.

Sounds as though current owner is pretty useless. Would be a massive gamble but might actually make someone a nice horse with work. Too often we label the horse with the faults of the owner... ('bolting' with a novice cd well just mean spooking or piddling off and rearing could be lack of confidence or badly fitting tack as well as something more sinister...).

Have said all that 3.5k does sound like a lot.

i got my 4 yr old ex racer for £100! luckily he has turned out great, but its always a gamble with ex racers and tbh i wouldnt pay 3.5k for a TB that rears anyway, maybe she should get somebody out to check all the normal back, teeth ect as there may be a problem somewhere, and I couldnt live with myself knowing i had sold something that could potentially kill someone!

no no it was me being the dimwit :)

Loving the politeness on this thread, make a refreshing change!!

I would say £400.
Friend of mine bought a gorgeous 7 yr old TB gelding from a novice who had lost her nervethen lost her job, She needed rid of him. Friend offered her £250 and got him. Sold him a few months later for £2500. He was a lovely horse.

I had a 7 year old TB had a months schooling before xmas and i too had lost confidence on him as he started trying it on had winter off and just sold him for £500

Agree with this. When I read about the 'bolting' and rearing, my first thought was that it had a novice, nervous rider. May well be a lovely horse with a competent rider, but as it stands at the moment, its worth very little unless its got good verified breeding and was once well schooled. Even then, at best,it could be a nice bargain for someone at a 10th of what she's asking.
Poor horse.
