We'll be moving in a month and luckily at the new house there's a barn, unfortunately no stables. Need a quick fix until the start of the new year when we will be installing internal stables, but until then I was thinking two gates 15ft x 12ft with plywood each side to prevent legs going through. Would kickboard along the barn walls be okay or should I just get four gates to be safe? Hope this makes sense, its in my head but don't know how to put it in words! Any other ideas welcome! :)

In my foaling barn I use a gate system. My gates are like this http://www.applegatelivestock.com/products.aspx?x=yWf3k12BOHM1FkLgG6TqrUdOrkRtVLe/ and they work fantastically well as I can alter the size of each stable as and when I need to. It takes me 2 mins literally to make a 12x12 into a 12x72 if I so wish, just by opening the gates. I use the gates only for fronts and partitions; the back and sides of the barn have kickboards but there's no reason you couldn't use gates for the interim. I absolutely love this system! So much better than one of my other barns which has set-sized internal stables.

The yard I ride at also has some stables that are made with a gate system similar to Spring Feather's - the outer walls are 'proper' solid walls but the internal divisions are gates than can be moved to adjust the size of the stables.

I've done this in the past too. Great for box rest too as you can gradually remove partitions and increase the size. The only problem I had was they weren't quite tall enough and my yearling would jump out...
