Ten Pound Pony!

Just curious (those who remember 'Fly by Night', 'Ten Pound Pony' etc...) How many of you have bought a horse/pony really cheap, and it turned out to be something special - I know all of our four legged friend are something special, but you know what I mean??!!

I got a filly off the Dartmoor Drift, not registered, and didn't look too well, weaned to early etc. Turns out I think we have a little mare that would do well both showing and performing (I still can't work out how to add photos!).

Would like to hear your stories - speaking of which, I can't for the life of me remember a well known author of lots of my favorite pony stories - Purnell maybe?? You know the ones, they are penniless, then buy an old farmhouse with a paddock and make a million serving cream teas and pony rides....?

Always had cheapies that need work. But do actually have a £10 pony. Bought as a sympathy vote. To cut a long story short was weaned at 3 mnths & kept alone, out of sight of any other animals at all till I offered owner a tenner for her as a yearling. Mother was a mini afaik & we think sire was a new forest. Brought her home in the boot of a disco, as I couldn't leave her where she was & at 6h wasn't going in a normal trailer. Put her out with my motherly mare, who mothered her & had a nice stable herd. We just let her be a baby really. Daughter & pony always had a bond & my mare helped a lot too. Main issues were expected really, once she had found company she wasn't going to be alone again & used to stay within feet of mine for first few months. I just took everything slow & daughters done as much as me, just silly stuff like teaching her to play football & drink from hoses & cups! She's now rising 5, 11.1 & having the time of her life with my 7yr old daughter riding her. She's sharp but sweet. Only lasting damage is that she won't tolerate being dominated, gets aggressive. And is very confident about getting in anything or approaching new stuff. Not sure if its because the only regular human contact she's had is us & she associates new with good, or cos she's got skewed instincts from that first year. Either way, don't think I could have found a better 2nd pony if I'd gone looking.

So lovely! Ours was only really bought as a companion, but we have big hopes now from working on the farm to being a childs first pony - if I'm ever blessed with children! The ten pound pony lives on!
