Tender horse... any ideas?

Whilst grooming Phoenix today he seemed tender down both sides around the flank area.

He trotted and cantered up the field when I called him in, and he's definitely not lame. His feet are fine, he has no knocks, bumbs, cuts, swellings (that I could tell) but flinched when I brushed him.

I prodded and poked around on both sides and he seemed uncomfortable from the flank down to the hock on both legs...

Would this be better in the vet forum??? I only really use the SB normally.....

I'm going out in 10 mins, I'd answer but I am not sure what you mean by 'flank'?
Normally, flank refers to the horse's sides towards the back of his barrel, but you confused me by mentioning hocks?
As a very vague suggestion, pain like this can often be due to sore muscles...due to running around fields like idiots...if you mean his hind leg from stifle to hock?

yes, his flank and higher up, then round and down past his stifle to his hocks... does that make sense???

They were hooning around yesterday as 2 new ponies were introduced.

Forgot to mention he is unbroken, so it's not a ridden injury..

Is it remotely possible that he has been running around like a demented thing, and either has stiff achy muscles, or has slid and fallen right over on his side/s?
It has been known for my youngsters to be busy auditioning for the Spanish Riding School (well, in their minds), only to have all four hooves betray them and hit the deck.

If he is sound, (even if a little stiff), and is eating, drinking and behaving normally, I'd be inclined to give it a week. If he doesn't get better by then, call the vet. Remember though, that stiff muscles are usually sorest a day or so after the idiocy - so he'll probably be worse Mon/Tues then get better.
Hope this helps - I'm off out now!

Ok cool thanks. He is normal in all other ways, so will just keep an eye for now...

It is pretty grim down there at the moment, so him doing roly-polys is not out of the question.

Been kicked or bitten perhaps? Obviously not hard enough to cause a lesion of any kind but maybe enough to cause soreness? Try some arnica maybe?
