Hi all. Two days ago, while picking out my boy's hooves after a short walk, I noticed his left hind was swollen a bit. Checked again tomorrow, and leg was filled from fetlock and higher up, but not around the hock. When viewed from the side, it had slightly bow-like apperance. Horse is not in work, not ridden, only turned out in small pasture, alone. Has no history of that leg injury, ever, and few months ago, his both hinds were ultra-sounded and no soft tissue damage was found. Horse is sound in walk and very willingly going up/down hills. I tried trotting him in circle, no evident lameness in trot, goes willingly. Yesterday, he seemed like he is in a little pain when touching it, but he does not react to touching today, even if I squeeze a bit. And definitely not lame. I cold-hosed the leg, hand-walked him, and put cooling gel. Leg does give off some heat around the enlarged part, but nothing major. BO says he probably did it while running in muddy pasture, and thinks it is no big deal, plus he said bows do not normally occur in hind legs, especially in out of work horses. :/ I'm so worried now, and thinking about calling a vet. To help settle my upset mind, please share any help, advice and anything you can think of. Thanks a lot. <33

I'd definately be asking an equine vet to examine that leg. There can be significant damage without lameness. Curious to know why both his hinds were ultrasounded a few months ago?

The fact that he is not lame is odd. Is this his only white leg? You mention muddy paddocks, and I'm thinking mud fever. I have seen filled legs a couple of times without lameness. One was mud fever - two white legs one front and one hind, both swollen, both white.

And the horse in my avatar scared the hell out of me once by filling one front and both hind legs (all black) and it was lymphatitis (sp?). Of course it was an Easter weekend (truly!) and my regular vet was away. People kept telling me to hose them and I was ready to scream - since when does a horse present with three filled legs! Only mine.

However, definitely get the vet. Better to know it's nothing to worry about.

I would get the vet to scan, it is not that expensive,or intrusive at all.

But, I am also the person who twice had Charlie horse scanned clean, only for mud fever to appear days later :-). Both times after a muddy event where he had boots on, and for some reason the mud fever did not show until after the scan.

my mare had a 50% lesion of her DDFT and was sound in walk and trot - only sign was swelling just above the fetlock. It doesn't cost much to scan it so have it scanned and know for sure what you're dealing with

The horse being scanned a few months ago has zero relevance to this situation. If you had an xray last week but fell and broke your arm today you would still get an xray today....ie scans/xrays are only really good for the day they are taken. Things can and do change. It's prob worth getting the vet to have a look. It could be a wrench, mudfever, filling, cellulitis....basically anything!

Not necessarily. The horse would not have been scanned just for fun, so there must have been something amiss back then, which could potentially be related to the current issue.
