Hi thanks for your replies. Rang the vet today who suggested coming out to scan next week but found out of a livery friend that a vet from the same practice was coming out to another two liveries on our yard so had him and he felt leg and diagnosed a splint. My horse nearly jumped through the roof when he palpated it so it is definetely that. I forgot to say in my previous post that I noticed a fleck of blood on that leg last night and felt a little scab which I removed and put gel on. The vet reckons he has knocked his opposite hoof onto his splint bone which has left the nick. He says the swelling which was quite signficant tonight may be due to a bit of infection but he didn't feel it necessary to give any antibiotics and said see how he goes over the weekend. I was trying to relay to the vet that the horse has had this up down swelling over his tendon area for some weeks now but the vet doesn't think it is signifcant and felt his tendons and said it definetely wasn't those especially not the ddft. He is confident in his diagnosis and to be honest he is a very good vet so I am going with what he says. He's told me to walk him tommorow maybe try a little trot on sunday to assess for lameness and he says to ice it twice a day on the splint. Apparently the best thing for splints is now thought to be working through it as it remodels the bone. He says to see if the leg swells anymore over the course of the weekend and if it does he will come out on Monday and re-assess accordingly but seems to think there will be no further problems. The horse already has two splints so this is of no real suprise other than the fact that I thought it was a tendon, so as you can imagine I am extremely relieved. x
