I'm a junior event rider and last year my horse overstretched his Impar ligament- a small ligament in the middle of the hoof, close to the deep digital flexor tendon.
This happened in June last year (2010). He has now had 9-10 months off. I hope to start bringing him back into work again mid April. Because of where the injury was he has had no treatment as such, just time off. He is sound at the moment and is in the walker every day.
This is him

He is an amazing horse.....competed up to junior * and won nearly every event he entered.
Could anyone with experience tell me what kind of training plan i should have to bring him back into work?
If he is fit, sound, and the ground isnt too hard then i hope to take him out to a few events late in the season at pre-novice, just to ease him back in slowly.
All advice valued.
Thanks
Sahnya

Mine tore his DDTF last yr.
This is the regime we used to bring him back to full fitness. -I'm ignoring the inhand stuff as you say he's already on the horse walker.
I did mine twice a day, which was really hard work to fit it in, but mine was on box rest until the canter work.
Week 1-7 I used a concrete farm track to ride on to strengthen tendons and not worry about rutted ground. I then went into a big field to do the laps of trot/canter. I also kept using the concrete track.
Totally sound for hacking now, my choice not to jump.

Weeks 1-4
I rode 20mins twice a day in walk.
Weeks 5-6
I then increased this to 30mins (twice daily still)
Week 6
Add in 5mins trot to the overall 30mins (twice daily) (by end of week, trot for whole 5mins)
Week7
Up it to 10mins trot (twice daily) by end of week trot for whole 10mins.
Week 8
Up it to 15mins trot (twice daily) as above by the end of the week.
Week 9 & 10
Up it to 20mins trot (twice daily) as above by the end of the week.
Week 11.
Keep trot work the same and start adding a bit of canter. (twice daily)
Weeks 12 - 15
Add more canter & go out for up to an hour twice a day
Weeks 15 +
Normal work -pre injury. Start jumping when ready.
