Hi my horse has suffered a tendon injury 3 weeks ago and has just had her first scan and I wondered if anyone could give me advice whether they started hand walking on roads or on a school surface. It has been a horrible time and the injury was caused through no fault of my own and I am gutted. Any help or advice on rehabilitation would be greatly appreciated.:(

sorry no help - don't start hand walking too soon I was told to and he went lame again - 3 years later and I am still hand walking part time.

My livery also has a tendon injury and it is still lame after 3 months. Don't rush it leave the horse to have some time to heal

You really need specific device from your vet, who will know your circumstances. I started walking in hand after about a fortnight, but it differs dramatically for each horse. I'd expect you to need to walk on hard smooth surfaces.

Good luck - it's rotten. Try not to worry too much, there are lots of successes out there x

Hi, I have brought an Arc machine and she wears it for 3 hours a day. The vet has been very good, we are only doing 5 mins a day for one week and then increasing 5 mins the following week etc. She is having some lazer treatment as well starting soon. I thought about spa/water treadmill a little further on?? Going to take it very slowly.
HGA-12 did you also hand graze??

Yes you're probably right re; horse treadmill but I think the spa would be helpful for healing now? but obviously getting her there could be stressful and unnecessary risk at this point. I think slowly is a the main thing and more time than you think is too much. I hope she comes right again for you.

It depends on the extent of the injury. Ideally you walk out on a hard surface. But I didn't with my lads. I had one who completely ruptured his SDFT. 3 months in a box, 3 months walking - got bored walking after 10mins so rode him for the longer periods after that. I started him out in November so had the worst of winter to walk him out in.

Mine had a lesion on her SDFT three years ago, it was operated on but they discovered that her manica flexoria was torn too! She started controlled walking on a hard surface fairly soon and built up from 5 mins twice a day, to twenty mins twice a day. After 6 months box rest, she was allowed out and is now fine although a field ornament as didn't want to risk injury again.

Tendon injuries are far from the end of a horses ridden or competitive life. Many racehorses come back from injury to race again - Inglis Dreaver for example - won 2 World Hurdles, had a year off for a tendon then came back and won a 3rd World Hurdle.
