Tendon sheath inflammation

Following an ultrasound scan yesterday our new forest pony has been diagnosed with chronic tendon sheath inflammation.
Vet has recommended either surgery or steroid injection. We are not insured and the surgery is beyond reach, so trying the steroid injection next week.
Anyone with experience of this, how successful were the steroid injections and how likely is the pony to return to full work? What else can we try to get a good outcome?
We have only had the pony for 7 months, she is my daughter’s first pony and she is so upset .

My RDA group got a driving horse that had had this problem. He came sound with rest, no surgery. He could not however stay sound for a competitive career but did fine in our sedate setting and it was a completely different problem that ended his life.

Mine did his near side hind tendon and I just remember an initial scan and the vet medicating with steroid followed by another scan and return to work. But I'm going back to around 2005 so I don't remember how long he was off for.

Knowing me I would have iced or hosed the hell out of it first initially. He had 11 years afterwards of jumping dressage and 3, 2 and one day events so it healed fine.

I had one about 40 years ago. Healed with rest and no further issues.
