Hi could anyone share there experiences good or bad with the tenosynovitis or sacroiliac strain , my horse has been diagnosed with both
He is on an initial 4 weeks box rest ,bute and i am applying gel (cant remember the name of it ) twice daily to his fetlock .My vet has said after 4 weeks i can start hand walking him twice a day for 5 mins and im to back him up 10 steps .
He might also need intravenous soduim hyaluronate treatment 4 times a week then going to monthly  I am looking at a min of 10 months before he can return to work :(
Any experiences with either conditions would be very much appreciated ,Thanks

My symapthy Bings!

My horse has tenosynovitis and a strained bursa - no sacroiliac strain. She has been on complete box rest for about 3 months now (I'm trying not to count the days!) and has been on 2 bute daily. She's down to 1 bute daily in another week and is due to see the vet again in 3 weeks. It looks like it's going to be a long time sorting. I'm planning on putting her in foal next year with the vet's agreement. Her comment was 'She might be just about fixed by then' - so that probably ties in with your 10 months :(

That said - I do think with these things it depend on how bad they are, so please don't let what I have said above make you think that your horse will necessarily be out of action for so long!

Best wishes to you and your horse for a speedy recovery!

My horse was diagnosed with this as they couldn't find anything else on the scan. The vet gave me some compagel to rub on, and I sent the horse off to a spa for 3 weeks to help with the injury. Leg went back to normal size after 1.5 weeks at the spa. He was on bute for about 2 weeks. Had a further 1 week box rest, and then started a programme of ridden work in walk along with restricted paddock turnout. That was 2 months ago now, and fingers crossed hasn't flared up again.

Can you ice his leg twice a day? I was also doing this with mine, buy a human compression bandage, put on the horses leg doubled over and fill with ice (making sure ice doesn't touch skin directly)

Re the sacro strain, has the vet advised physio/chiro?

hi , my horse had tenosynovitis in 2008 , he had 6 weeks field rest , i fenced off his field shelter and a small patch in front of it instead of box rest
i also used cold packs on his leg
he was bought back in work slowly , walked out 10 mins twice a day first then then increased
it happened in the may and he was back in normal work by the august
his leg is now excluded for insurance but *touch wood* he's had no problems with it since

Thank you for your replies , its really good to hear your experiences , i can put ice packs on twice a day , i wonder why my vet hasnt suggested it
I have started to use bioflow magnetic boots to help with his circulation while he is on box rest ,i will be having my vet out in 3 weeks ,and he is going to scan him ,so fingers crossed he hasnt done anything major .

oh and vet has said not to have anyone work on his back for a bit ,he wants him rested to reduce the inflammation , i think he will need si injections in his sacroiliac joint :( has anyone had this done before ?
