My dad's moaning at me looking at autos but to be honest I think I'd find them easier to drive - I'm not used to a big vehicle and when I drive a transit I find it hard work with a manual!

What are you experiences of an auto?

x

WellI tow with my auto-matic discovery and neverhave any problems, I have also converted a harden bloke over to the wonders of automatics for towing with.

They just make life a lot easier especially with horses in the back , you can just concentrate on breaking and steering for a nice smooth ride.

You still have 1 2 3 gear should you ever require them.

I have used an automatic and find it no problems and no clutch problems. My Cargo horsebox is automatic and gives the horses a far better and less jerky ride than a manual
auto's are no problem in the snow due to the 'manual override' you can have using D3, 2 and 1.

Nissan gearboxes have been good and never failed for me and I've driven a few over 100k miles.

particularly around south london with all the traffic you will find it much less tiring than driving a manual

final reason for an automatic - you can drive it with one good arm and one good leg - if you've gone to a show and had a prang and are feeling stiff and sore - you can still drive yourself home

not so easy to drive a manual with only one working arm and one working leg !!!

when i had to swop to a 4x4 i was told to buy auto. i have for 23 years driven manual and was not happy with the idea of having auto. i am now a convert have been driving auto for 8 months and hate it when i have to get in a manual car. would never buy a manual again.

I have a manual lorry which is fine, but do think Autos give a smoother ride for horsey.

I drive an auto mercedes truck for work and it is so much easier, although I do find I try and put my foot on a non existent clutch sometimes!

Interestingly, we're about to swap our Maverick because the gearbox is on it's way out (very noisy in all gears apart from direct drive 4th gear) and it's only just done 100k. Our Terrano has done 132k and gearbox is fine. Luck of the draw I guess.

New clutch in January.... hubby blames my driving!

This is the main reason I plan to have another Terrano though. Looking at some Discovery's around 2001/2001 plate and I've not found one yet that is less mileage than our own car. Can get a Terrano on a 52 plate with well under 40k on the clock.

Never driven an auto.

We have a 52 plate Terrano auto 3.0 turbo diesel. Its FAB!!! best and easiest car I've ever driven. I went from a peugeot 306 to driving the terrano and I was worried about the jump from driving a normal sized car to a 4x4 and I think that getting an auto was a really great idea. I don't think I'd ever go back to a manual if I could help it.
We got the car to tow with, which it does brilliantly. OH drives (I haven't taken towing test yet) and he says it is really easy, and far easier than towing with a manual. We can only tow 2 tons with ours though, so a IW 505 and only 1 x 15.2 neddie allowed. Thats not a problem for us as only ever need to take one horse. The ride it gives is really smooth. I was worried about hills with an auto but it does cope with the steep hills near us with no probs both up and down.

All in all a great car.

That's what I thought patches - in fact if its lwb then defo 2.8 - my friend has older one and tows two horses most weekends! X
