Terrible incident at SJ yesterday

Went to the Grange yesterday in that bloody awful weather so the indoor warm up area was pretty busy. I don't know exactly what happened but all I heard was a loud sickening Thud and a woman groaning. Don't know exact details but she had been kicked badly in the side/back and lay in agony on the floor. Ambulance arrived and it was obvious it was serious. Air ambulance came, it was amazing how calm the horses were, we were all put adjacent to her in the sj ring whilst the helicopter landed nearby. Hope shes ok. Was told that it didn't look good (internal injuries etc), wondered if anyone else was there and knows how she is?

Makes you think of all the near misses we have all the time doesn't it? It's quite a regular thing when I say to myself "that was close" regarding one thing or another.
 
mm, last time i was in a collecting ring a booming kid on a speeding pony almost colided head on with my horse, then had the nerve to give me attitude, despite it being a one direction ring and her going the wrong way...
 
Tell me about it, why is it that if for instance you are entering the 2ft 6" class some numpty puts the practice jump up at 3ft and jumps it repeatedly? I truly think some people think that its there just for them and get a mum/friend etc to guard the practice jump and ignore every other rider! Also I saw very little evidence of passing left to left as well. My horse hates the warm up area when its busy, its all i can do to trot a complete circuit without being cut up.
 
i go to the showjumping locallly in the week, and there are several 'helpers' per horse/pony in the collecting ring, despite repeated requests over the tannoy that anyone not on a horse should leaave the collecting ring

why anyone should want to stand about in there is beyond me!
 
I am afraid I would be one of those who would ignore the tannoy message at your local centre. I would only be on foot in a collecting ring in order to do a fence for whoever I was helping and dont stay in there any longer than I have to. unfortunately when venues are busy you do tend to get quite a few people on foot, all of whom are there to help their rider and queues are invitable.

Something like this is very hard to police and people on foot in collecting rings are always going to be there. TBH suprised there are not more accidents. Hope the lady in the original post was not severely hurt.
 
mrsT, often the ones i see are gathered around a pony which is stood in the middle of the ring being used as a grandstand, which seems totally pointless as well as dangerous. of course fence helpers are necessary, but often it seems to be gatherings of people who seemingly are doing nothing!

I was at a show yesterday, and the warm up was unbelievably busy, I'm surprised there wasn't an accident. When the ring was only for the nursery novice ponies (1ft9) to warm up, this one girl waltzed in on her big fancy showjumper and whacked the jump up to about 4ft and jumped it repeatedly. It was really intimidating, so she was shouted at! I hate it when people do that

I was in a collecting ring and loads of kids kept hurtlig into my horse ( they were riding 3 a breast ) on the 3rd occasion my mare kicked out and caught a child and i was nearly dragged of my mare by the childs parent, not a good experience but i had warned them before it happened and they continued to get to close and press her up against the wall , on the 3rd occasion the pony ran into her and she told it where to go!!
 
I have taken to yelling "oxer" "upright" etc when warming up now when it is busy. I cannot be arsed with people cutting in front when you are about to jump. Also go given attitude for walking my horse on the inside (keeping off the track for those working in) and so changed to the track, and got attitude again, even though was going left to left!!

Agree, surprised there arent more accidents in the warm ups. Hope lady involved was ok.
 
totally agree about yelling Oxer and Upright, not everyone seems to know what it means though... i hate collecting rings with an absolute passion.
new boyf is fairly aggressive though, can't wait to have him stationed near the practise jump, if someone's hogging it unreasonably and i want to jump it once or twice, i can't see him letting there be a problem in changing it for 30 secs for me...!

It means 'get out of the way, I am about to jump the fence' in the warmup you have an upright normal fence and one with two pairs of wings which is made into a spread or an Oxer

Cheers, had this weird vision of a giant upright oxo cube wrapped in silver paper in the middle of a arena, then when it rained everyone was in the gravy.

Collecting rings are stewarded rigorously here in France. I believe, and correct me if I am wrong, that the Steward has to have some sort of qualification?, anyway, at some venues, there is a strict rule that only the next ten horses are allowed in, and you get called in to start your warm up jumping.I am not saying this is totally safe, the French riders mostly shout Oxer, whichis the same word, and I cant remember what they shout for Upright, but on the whole its better. There is a strict running order, which you know in advance because it is e mailed to you.
