Anyone else got a terrier with a serious lack of common sense? I have a small JRT, who loves (obviously) to chase anything she finds within our field. Chasing a magpie doesn't cause a problem, and just leaves a disgruntled magpie finding somewhere else to land - but a Red Kite? Seriously, it could eat her for breakfast and still feel hungry! At least I can call her off those though - foxes are another matter entirely. We have to keep her on a lead once dusk arrives as if the enormous resident trio of foxes decide to cut across the field, she's off, and it's extremely difficult to call her back.

Ha ha!! That's a terrier I'm afraid. They believe themselves to be absolutely enourmous and sooooooo fierce!!

Ours got run over on the A50(main Derby/Stoke dual carrageway) a couple of weeks ago. She tumbled over and over, then got up and chased the car down the road, barkin and snarling as she did, much to my sons disbelief and horror!!

After the emergeny vets visit, it was found that she had suffered scatches, bumps and shock!

She was also very cross:eek:

Don't you just love em??

I had a Lancashire Heeler like this in other ways she was very intelligent but when her blood was up common sense went out the window.
I just worked very hard on her recall and had to be alert to any dangers.

I am impressed you have Red Kites, have never seen them although they are starting to work their way inton Somerset.

No known cure I'm afraid! Tink has been beaten up many a time but she is undeterred! I nearly cried when she tried to take on a badger!

As others have said, think it is just a terrier thing. Evie chases birds but when she set off after a buzzard, which was eating a rabbit on the ground, she slowed down as she got nearer and saw the size and then pretended she was interested in something elsewhere in the field.:D
As it had a happy ending I had to smile at your terrier wanting to sort out the car Elsbells. :p

Don't worry (typical terrier!) Kites are quite Lazy birds and prefer carrion to a live prey that fights back, we have loads round here and buzzards and they prefer easy meals, they get mobbed by the rooks and crows and simply fly off!! They usually catch small mammals if they absolutely have to and the buzzards eat a lot of earthworms.

I often put out some food for them in the winter when it snows so they are always flying over begging.

What you do need to worry about is European Eagle Owls, I believe there are some in Yorkshire, they are not natives and it's believed someone released them, they kill small deer and will kill buzzards and Kites so a dog or cat would be on their menu!!!!!

Only behaving like a normal little terrier, after all you do have to be a bit foolhardy to go down a fox earth without a torch and take on whatever is down there ,great little dogs in my biased opinion.
