I took the dogs for a walk with my family today - we have two 11 month old JRTs and we had a horrible experience. We had gone about three quarters of a mile when we bumped into someone with a really cute little pomeranian (sp) and were chatting to her when this big pit bull like dog came up and with no provocation attacked the little dog and bit it. The dog yelped and then ran off fast down the lane. My dogs went off after it and I called them back and they came. Bunny (girl dog) ran back into the field whilst we stood of the path waiting for the woman to come back with her dog in case she needed some support against the pit bull like dog. The next time I looked Bunny wasn't there. I called her and called her and was in a complete panic - my brother and sisters went off to look for her and I phoned my daughter to get her and her sister on their bikes to ride round to help look. Anyway Jenny answered the phone with Bunny's here! She had run all the way home and stood at the front door barking to be let in. She had then rushed in to the house and her heart was going at double the normal rate. And to be honest so was mine!!

It was so scary I was sure I had lost here forever - I have heard so many stories about JRTs going missing.

The shocking thing was that once we were all sorted and were setting off walking again the pit bull type dog came back to try and attack Mumble (boy dog) and I had to pick poor Mumble up and he was shaking madly. All this time the owner stood yards away feebly shouting his dog to come back whilst I am trying to move away and he is jumping up at me trying to get to Mumble. It was the first time I had met an out of control dog whilst walking.

Poor Bunny is fast asleep on the sofa now - she is worn out by the drama of the day!

Bet that was scarey....Im paranoid about random dog attacks like that(have seen some pretty horrific ones)...esp with my whippets...hence by I always take my rotti/akita as their body guards

I was totally panicking. They are my oldest daughter's dogs and I thought she would kill me!!

I was really surprised that she could find her way home and that she knew to do it and to bark at the door to be let in.

Glad you're all O.K. I know how scary these sort of attacks can be and have had to hold Oz (JRT) above my head to stop a PBT type getting him (I had already seen it attack a Lab & a Vizla and was heading off the common trying to avoid it). It kept jumping to get him and its owners did F all.

You should report it to the police, giving them description of dog and owner, time it happened and any other details that you can remember. If you can get a picture of the dog and it's owner that would help. I know it would be the last thing on your mind, but if someone was with you they could help.

Owners with dogs like this need to be prosecuted. If the dog is a danger, and it certainly appears to be, and bites someone or another dog, it would be put to sleep. A horrible thing to think about but everyone's safety is more important.

Totally agree!!
Next time this stupid owner takes that dog out it could meet a child with a puppy ... that could easily end in tragedy with a dead pup and badly bitten child

However distasteful , an attack like this should always be reported.
Just glad you were all ok this time.

I did wonder whether I should do something - my worry was that it wasn't my dog that was hurt and in the trauma of losing Bunny and looking for her I lost sight of the man and couldn't describe him now.

I was really shocked as we walk through those fields and by the Mersey regularly and meet loads of dogs and we have never had a bad experience. He just had no control over the dog at all and when her first pulled the dog away the dog slipped his collar and ran back at the other dogs.

I was walking with my JRT and 2 staffy's attacked him, My OH was with me picked up my dog with 2 staffy's attached to him, the only way he could stop them was to punch them and knock them out. It was horrific. 3 children were in sole charge of dogs.

If you have a mobile with camera, make sure you have with you at all times.

I remember cantering on the beach with my friend when a dog came chasing after us. The owners, who were a good distance away, called it but kept walking in the other direction. When we managed to stop our horses, who were both terrified, the dog was running round barking and jumping up at us and the horses were spinning and jumping about. We were beside rocks and getting pushed closer and closer to them. It was terrifying as the horse could have tripped and crushed me against the rocks. The dog eventually ran back to it's owners. We went after them and tried to speak to the owners - there were four people in the group. A woman had the dog on it's lead by this time. When I asked why she didn't come and get her dog, she replied in her very stuck-up voice, 'I thought he would come back when he saw us going away.' Bl---y idiot - the dog was looking at us not her. I explained that the dog could have been injured or even killed if the horse had kicked it and she said, 'Well I know that'. She smirked when I said that I could have been killed on the rocks. If I had got off my horse, I think I would have thumped her very hard and stuffed the marbles that were in her mouth, down her throat - stuck up bitch.

A policeman friend said we should have followed them and got their car number or address and then report them. We will the next time.
