Went to Tesco this afternoon and bought 5 of those green hook on feed bucket mangers on clearance for £1.99 each! They also had the flat sided feedbuckets for £2.49 on clearance as well.

For Leicester people, it was the Beaumont Leys Tesco I went to and I think I bought up all the hook on mangers but they still had some of the flat sided buckets left. I know the Hamilton Tesco sells tack but I don't know if they would have the same clearance specials there as well. The South Wigston Tesco has NO tack ever which is bizarre as there are quite a few stables around here!

For the rest of the country, you may want to check your Tesco's to see if there is anything else on clearance!

Yes! Where have you been?

Not all do it though, some only do it seasonally like the South Wigston Tesco near me but the big flag ship stores tend to have a little section in the outdoors aisle (along with the camping, biking and watersports stuff).
No saddles or anything like that, just the basics like rubber riding boots, buckets, helmets, jods, breeches, gilets, brushes, treats, hoof oil, haynets, crops, headcollars, leads, etc.

I always get my brushing boots from Tesco as they fit quite nice and they are hard wearing.

They're poly hats and acctually quite good. we're sponsored by them at work and although they look a bit rubbish they're adjustible for everyone, great for pupils, nice, light and cool too.
The tescos on barnstaple sells the horsey stuff so i'd think a plymouth one would!

I brought some really great jods from tesco - £20 - and they are really comfy and wash well. They aren't anything special - but do the job. The only numnahs I now use are from Lidl - £12 - half fleeced lined and a good size.
Also brought some hi viz brushing boots from Tesco - want to get another set now - they are really great.

Tesco are like a disease they kill everything around them so that nobody is left with any choice as to where they would like to buy their shopping. They kill towns and make them ghost towns and people should be aware of this. Also they have a poor record on welfare of their own brand chickens (Hugh Fernely Whittingstall is doing a great job trying to change this, good on him

While Tesco's isn't my fav shop in the world, to be fair- South Wigston were I live, is a pretty rubbish area anyways with hardly any good shops. Just alot of fast food places, a "hydroponics" i.e. marijuana shop which shut down, two bland shoe shops, some hairdressers and some off-licienses which sell booze to the local yobby kids.
With Tesco's here, it has livened up the area a bit more and given me somewhere else to shop besides the rubbish overpriced and poor selection co-op.

Just out of curiousity and not meaning to be funny but why don't you buy horse stuff from those shops?

The reason is because these items are the 'bread and butter' of tack shops. By taking away the sale of these goods you are drastically lowering the profits, hence tack shops are closing. I prefer to support local tack shops in order to help keep them afloat, so I can go along and handle/see/discuss goods. The internet is already having a bad effect, especially on smaller (independant) Tack shops.

Got a pair of Tesco jods and they are very huge for a size 14 but good for fat days, hardwearing and warm.
Also Tescos jodphur boots but although they look ok, I wasn't til i jumped off my horse that I noticed they had no air cushioning in the soles -ouch - a bit basic!

Still I just bought the most fabulous dealer boots/chelsesa boots by northwest territories in solid brown heavy duty leather with air-cushioned sole from a company that sells on ebay for £23.00 they are virtually the same as Mountain Horse type endurance riding boots. We get so taken for a ride with these equestrian suppliers shops.

I think supermarkets selling horsey gear is just great - if its cheap and practical so what if they dont last as long as Pikeur, they dont cost as much so I am happy cos I am a poor bird.

Lidl is great for horse gear too and the best motorcycle gear I bought came from there.

You must be fairly wealthy then if you prefer to give your money away for stuff that can be purchased for half the price in supermarkets or on the internet.
Most of us are glad to be able to get stuff at reasonable prices, that's why the tack shops that sell at exorbitant prices are closing down, and that to me seems a good thing.

Yes, I totally understand wanting to support local tack shops but sometimes tack shop prices are WAY above what I can afford to spend. I'm lucky to have two wonderful tack shops in my area, one who sells only English made items (and that has a treasure trove of 2nd hand and factory 2nd's, this is where I got my latest saddle from) for good prices and the other that sells normal cheapo stuff but that can order anything in for you.

Unfortunately, the one that sells English stuff, because they get whatever people bring in or whatever the Walsall factories sell off, they don't always have what i'm looking for. With the other one, they often have to order stuff in which is annoying as alot of the times I need it right then and there (like the brushing boots I got from tesco).

I don't think people should rely on Tesco's or the other food stores to get their tack from exclusively, but unfortunately, it's handy for stuff that you need or that wears out quickly and can't afford to pay tack shop prices for.

Donkeymad.

Here here!

I also would never buy horsey stuff from supermarkets.

I don't buy meat/fruit+veg /dog food on principle as well. I would much rather buy from local butchers, feed merchants and fruit merchants or farmers markets.

I am not saying i don't buy anything from supermarkets but i only buy the bare minimum. I belive people rely far too much on supermarkets these days.

You only have to look at how much WOOF WEAR brushing boots have gone up in price in the past 15 years to know that we're being ripped off by the tack shops/manufacturers. Why can't we buy good, sturdy, well fitting basic equipment from tack shops at reasonable prices? A bit of neoprene, plastic and velcro does not cost very much to buy and turn into a boot... I've bought jodhpur boots, brushing boots, gloves and a couple of brushes from Tesco and I have to say they have been very good value for money.

I find it immensely frustrating that numnahs are so expensive - you try finding a plain cotton shaped forward cut jumping numnah (not square)! I've ended up paying £30 for jumping squares and cutting them to shape so I don't have a horse with sweaty sides in the summer months. And as for rugs - so many horse rugs are badly designed. Why do summer sheets and coolers almost invariably have one front strap? A second strap makes the rug so much more secure and it really wouldn't cost that much. Bridles with huge nosebands and throat lashes but tiny browbands...

Until tack shops and equestrian manufacturers start producing basic products which do the job they're supposed to, at a vaguely reasonable price, I won't feel any loyalty to them whatsoever!!

Rant over!
