I never thought id be saying this but im soooooooooooo impressed with tesco!!!!
I ordered a stable rug and pair of neoprene over reach boots yesterday came to the amazing cost of £21 and its turned up today!!!!!

Very few horsey shops have delivered that quick and no way at the prices i paid!!!!!!

I've got two bits, some bandages, some travel boots, pelham roundings, jods, brushes and gloves from tesco, all are good quality and fit well

The travel boots are fantastic and cost about £3!!!!

oh and additionally the stuff is cheap because it is sweat shop labour from some country like India or China where the workers are paid a pittance for long, health-damaging, working conditions

There is a median between buying cheap stuff from e.g.China and buying luxury stuff and I am prepared to pay that median so that I know I'm not knowingly paying for exploited workers and fat cat city bonuses

Er sorry Reynold, for a spare stable rug i will use them and not quite sure how they are rippping off farmers on EQUESTRIAN products.

I do however agree with you from a british produce point of view. And as we have a dairy farm think i can comment

It is very difficult to go to the shops & come back with a bag of items where a high percentage are not made in China.

I think you will find that may of the major rug producers have factories in China, vast amounts of clothing, household goods etc are also made there......so get real!

I have to say I agree with reynold to a point. To produce equipment at these prices they have to be using third world countries and paying a pittance in labour.
I also think it is important to support our local tack shops as they offer advice, varied products and an excellent service which tesco can't match imo. I wouldn't want to my local tack shop to lose all it's customers to Tesco

A friend of mine used to own a tack shop and she found it extremely difficult to make ends meet - she had to close in the end, which was a real shame. Another tack shop in my area has recently closed as well - it's hard enough for them as it is.

I won't buy horsey products from Tesco either, they are doing a great job of putting local traders out of business as they try to claim the monopoly on all markets.

I like visiting my local saddlers, I don't want to see them closed down because they cannot compete with the major supermarkets.

That's a free market for you I'm afraid. The tesco's stuff is excellent quality (mostly) delivery is very quick and if you buy when the sales are on really cheap otherwise I think it is more expensive than many other places. How do you know they use child labour? There are many factories in China etc that meet the ethical standards required of them. A lot of companies will only order from approved factories that do not use child labour, pay a fair wage for overtime and do not make their workers sleep in the racking.

From what little I know they pay more to the farmers for their milk than any of the other supermarkets.

My Tesco's sells locally grown carrots stamped up very prominently as such, then there's the red tractoe symbol on meat etc.

For those of us with budgets to meet I think Tesco's products are perfectly reasonable and since now a days all your expensive brand tack is made in india (inc many english branded saddles) and china; you've basically got very little option.

when a company is already blamed by the competition comission for it's trading practices in regard to Dairy products do you honestly think that their trading practices are likely to be that different when negotiating a deal with any other supplier - here or in China?

I want to support my local shops - including tack shops
I want to see a high street with althernatives to the big suppliers and with a variety of goods of quality and choice.

I do not want to walk round as a free advert board for Joules/Nike/whatever other brand is the fashion

Don't know about the farmer thing but Tesco's equestrian stuff is excellent. total bargains and good quality. I can't believe how well made the rugs I just bought from them are especially considering the price.

I have never bought from tesco because they have always sold out on the sizes I want by the time I get there - looks like brilliant value though.
My father runs a farm and I don't think that they are causing a problem with farming by selling what they sell. I personally buy british food and support british bred horses which I think is more important than not buying tesco rugs.

There are still a large number of manufacturers of equestrian products that manufacture within Great Britain.

They are of good quality and comply with the various British or European Standards where appropriate.

Although products in supermarkets may look well presented their quality is inferior because they are making the product to a price. The products may be cheep but they won't last.

Buying cheep is not always the best policy.

Have bought a tesco rug and it is great. Sent travel boots back cos they didn't fit Murph well, but he has got chunky legs. Re tescos supporting local farmers, I think they do pay farmers more than some other supermarkets. And I lost some sympathy for local farmers when I was in Lidl and spotted a local farmers wife, who is heavily involved with the Dairy Event, shopping there! many well known names are now sourcing their products overseas, have a look inside clothes etc, if it doesn't proudldy proclaim made in Gt Britain, then it isn't. And this includes well known wax jackets makes etc.

QR - let's jump on the 'knock successful companies' bandwagon! Tesco does pay fair prices, and their horse rugs are excellent. If British companies want to be competitive they need to stop ripping people off. We would all like to buy British, but I am not so much concerned as to where something is made as to the conditions under which it was made. However, in the real world it is all but impossible to shop ethically 100% of the time, and having a go at someone because they choose to shop from Tesco is pretty unreasonable.

OOoo I found your Tesco comment!

I have to say that Tesco are the first supermarket to stand up and OFFER to pay dairy farmers a minimum of 5ppl above the price offered by their dairy. Wiseman Dairies put their price up a staggering 4ppl a couple of days before the start of the new contract to Tesco. Increases for years have been no more than 0.2ppl here and there. Tesco still held their pledge and we got their increase on top of that. In less than a week we went from 19.4ppl to 29ppl. We can't remember a time when milk prices were that high. It might not sound alot of money, but we supply between 2500 and 2750 litres of milk a day. It soon adds up.

Asda sell whole chickens for £1.99. WHOLE chickens. I don't see you complaining about them ripping off farmers? Tesco's price comparison is £3.08 and the farmer does indeed get the extra money.

It was way back around Easter time that we signed the notice to swap over to Tesco starting this month. It was not a snap decision on the back of the recent report.

I can't comment about the equine equipment from Tesco, but I really don't agree with them as a company they are so money grabbing and gready and I've got no time for them. I realise it's all aout making a profit but IMHO they've taken it too far! I heard on the radio today that they have an annual turnover that is larger than the GDP (gross domestic product) of Wales!!!!

I havn't seen their range- but as a farmer's lass I have been banned from shopping there too, which is fair enough because I do believe they are well and truely in the wrong.

Well I'm a farmer and I've just bought loads of equine products from Tesco! (shouldn't have though....i spend waaaay too much

)

Tesco are actually extremely ruthless with their suppliers (except for farmers.....in some ways) which is why products are so cheap.

cor blimey didnt i do well in the tesco equine sale, just tried to buy another one of their stable rugs that i paid £13.97 for 3 weeks ago and already theyre up to £44.97, makes it even better in my eyes, roll on the next sale....now where is the sale link lets see if i can find it and get it to work haha
