Erm got an embarressing question!!! Well for him not me!! Have a 11month old coloured colt who I am hoping to keep entire as he has the looks, markings and breeding BUT at the moment he hasn't dropped his bits, keep checking which he quite enjoys

but nothing as yet, he isn't out right coltish but you know he's a colt, also when I had him delivered in December he had really dropped a scary amount of weight and condition and had a worm burden, defo wasn't the same horse I had seen and bought the previous June when I went to see him! Anyhow he's all sorted now and is putting on excellent condition in the right places with balanced feeding so am really pleased with him, growing well also, standing at 15hh just now so what I want to know is when roughly would you expect his bits to drop and do you think that his poor condition has affected this and if they don't drop soon will they drop eventually as they get bigger or will there be a chance they may be stuck up there somewhere and final question if this turns out to be a problem can it be inherited as I know of two other colts by the same sire who have had to go into vet hospital and have there's dug out as they didn't drop but the people had no intention of keeping them entire!! Long question I know!! Sorry!! BUT Advice please!!! HAPPY EASTER TO ALL!!

They can drop anytime between birth and 3yo, sometimes even later. I breed cobs and have just had my colts from last year gelded (12 of them) all had dropped luckily!:> I (sadly) have a rising 3 year old who only has one testicle atm and is getting a special op next week. He's known as a cryptorchid or rig. this is more common than people think being 1 in 6 colts!!! unbelieveable considering i've just had 12 with 2 each lol!
Don't worry about your colt just now..... he has plenty of time to enjoy all the good feeding and looking after before he needs his two stones!!

16 months? Crikey none of my colts have EVER taken that long to drop, Lol!

OP - most of my colts have dropped at around the age of 4 to 9 months. Some colts can take longer but they are the exception rather than the rule, in my experience.

I don't know how often you check but in the very cold weather they can suck them up when they are still little nuggets, so make sure to check on a mild day when the sun is shining.

Oh and make sure to check for two - crypts are relatively common.

Yep I have a little crypt rising 2 year old colt who will be going on his merry way to the vet surgery in the autumn if the other one hasn't plopped down by then. I don't think it is going to as his single one dropped at about 6 months old.

I would say should be both down around the year marker!
Has your vet had a grope round there yet?

Just because, without giving him a complex, some horses have really small testicles to start with! (had a 12yo stallion had to castrate (behaviour) who only had little golf ball sized ones! they should be much larger by that age, supposedly! hehe)

Spoke to vets and they have told me not to worry YET!! His one that I did feel is VERY smal, shame I laughed when IO found it and he sucked it back up quick as a flash! I've got so paranoid I'm checking most days now, think he's enjoying it

Not had the bill in yet.....:S My vet charged me £175 each for 6 that were done in the autumn.... still think this bill will be rather large.... it will probably include the special operation due next week for my Crypt hoping that won't be a fortune..... Oh the joys of horses eh?!
