I bought myself a cheap go-pro style camera from The Range last year for £30 and promptly forgot all about it. Discovered the thing in my drawer last week so set about trying to work out how I could get it to film my schooling sessions as I’m always on my own at the Farm.
So I’m umming and ahhing about how to do it and my wonderful dad appears with a big clip-type thing. We managed to attached the waterproof protective case to the clip and now I can simply clip the camera to the manège fence. Set it up yesterday evening attached to the short side of the school. I will play around with location this week but all in all I am made up! I can film my sessions now and watch them back to see what’s going well and what is not. I uploaded the footage to my computer and was able to get some nice stills off it aswell.
Granted, the quality isn’t perfect, but can’t grumble for £30!

So here is the Diva in action last night. I have cropped the images, the camera did cover the whole school apart from the two corners either side of it.

Diva is doing amazingly well for a pony given such a bleak outlook last year. We have a training system in place that is working for her- she does one to two twenty minute school sessions a week. Very light walk and trot with a short canter on each rein. I have to try and keep her in a slightly more open frame- infront of the vertical ideally. The middle picture is where she performs best with regards her breathing, but it’s taking some work as she does tend to try and come a bit deeper at times. The session is also made up of lots of walk breaks and stretching. Another three to four days a week we go hacking- a mixture of walk, trot and canter. We only does as much as she wants to and I am careful that she doesn’t get too enthusiastic as she is something of a speed demon. Management wise she is on a breathing supplement and gets as much turnout as possible. Aside from that she is treated completely normally. She is looking and feeling fantastic and hopefully we will get out to a few Intro tests this year.

If anyone is interested, The Range still have those cameras in, though I think they are £40 now. I can always upload a picture of how we have attached the clip to it. For anyone regularly on their own who wants to film their sessions, I highly recommend it. I plan to film both girls at least once a week.

Diva is lovely. (Small bias to mares called that though lol).....also glad to hear she is doing better breathing wise bless her.
What is the camera called? I like the idea of filming myself working with the beasts so I can see where I'm going wrong....

Aww, lovely update, I'm so glad you're able manage her. Camera sounds fab - I might pop out this week and get one. Would love to see a picture of the clip arrangement

It’s this one.

If that link doesn’t fully load (wasn’t doing for me when I tested it) type The Range camera into google, it should come up. It’s the active sport high definition waterproof action camera. See it’s still only showing as £30 online. Sure it was £40 in our local shop last week.
Definitely worth a purchase, you just need to buy an SD card for it, which I got from amazon.

Thanks for mentioning this. I have a slightly cheaper option (I have borrowed my daughter's Gopro and she only wants it back when she goes on holiday) I filmed my first session on Friday and found it really helpful (I really do need to sit up!). So easy to use and download and totally agree that you don't need very high quality definition as it just takes ages to download.

Great news that Diva is doing so well and you've found a system that works for her. I'm facing similar with my cob and would be interested in which supplement you've found helps.

The camera comes with a waterproof case and a variety of attachments, I assume for putting it on a head or chest strap. We found a big clip knocking around in the garage and screwed it onto one of the attachments.

GW- the supplement that seems to be having the most effect is Equine America Ventilate. Tried numerous others and didn’t feel there was any difference at all, but this one seems to keep her airway clear from other irritants, meaning she has full use of what little airway there is. Summer is a challenge, she struggles with the humidity and pollen so I am looking to see if there is a pollen type supplement to add to her diet during this time.

She is beautiful , you must be very proud . I'd never have thought of attaching my camera to record schooling, it's always stuck to me , thankyou ! I'll be trying as soon as the bucketing rain departs !

Thank you Scats that's a supplement I haven't tried. I'm also looking out for a something to help with pollen as that's J's main trigger combined with a narrow trachea. He has to be on nebulised steroids through the summer but I'm trying to find anything else that might help. Over the last two summers I've tried Winergy Ventilate, Global Herbs Pollenx and Feedmark Clarity unfortunately none of which have helped.

Looking good! It sounds like you have an uphilll struggle with her breathing, well done on finding a regime that suits you both.
